No specific test was performed on the dataset. For the 3 or 9 nautical mile line and EEZ lines, obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Ocean Service, the data is a reflection of the largest scale raster nautical charts of the area. The number of decimal places used in the output format does not imply an accuracy level higher than the source chart documents. Areas are calculated based on Albers Equal Area Conic Projection using the geographic extents of the largest fishery closure before openings began on 07/22/10, and should not be considered absolute. Area boundaries changed slightly at 28°N, 90°47'W, and 27°13'N, 87°30'W so the closure area could be described using coordinates rounded to the nearest minute, and still reflect the 30 nautical mile sampling grids used to sample seafood.

Points were selected to enclose the historic BP Oil Spill estimated on 10/01/10, and in water observations, to the state water line. An area was opened located along eastern Louisiana, just west of the Mississippi River delta. This area was originally closed because oil was present in the area; however, no oil or oil sheen has been documented in the area since August 6, 2010. NOAA began sampling the area on July 27 but suspended sampling when oil was observed by scientists aboard the sampling vessel. NOAA conducted a second and complete sampling of the area between August 15 and September 19 for finfish and shrimp once the area was known to be completely free of oil. Sensory analyses of 89 finfish and 25 shrimp samples, and chemical analyses of 188 finfish in 15 composites and 75 shrimp in 15 composites collected after August 15, followed the methodology and procedures in the re-opening protocol. Sensory analysis found no detectable oil or dispersant odors or flavors, and the results of chemical analysis were well below the levels of concern.
Lines were created from those points. The resulting line and the State/Federal water line were merged, then edited to remove the State/Federal water line that extended beyond the spill area. A polygon was created from the merged lines. The data was projected to Albers Equal Area Conic Projection (customized for this specific area). The area was calculated for the closure using ArcTools Utilities.
