The GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) was the first major international experiment of the Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP). It was conducted over the tropical atlantic ocean and adjacent land areas under the joint auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). The field operations extended from June through September 1974, with headquarters located in Dakar, Senegal. Digital data for GATE are listed under four categories: first, information products prepared during the experiments, next, nationally processed and validated data, third, internationally processed and validated data, last national holdings (raw data inventories). As a designated World Data Center, the archive only manages a subset of the data that was collected, including: general documenation, satellite, upper air, ship, radar, in situ rainfall data.

Digital data available for information products prepared during the experiment are as follows: 1. quick look data set - 7 tapes. 2. unvalidated teleprinter paper tape data set tapes. digital data available for national processed and validated data are as follows: 7 tapes, general. 28 tapes, ship, general. 120 tapes, ship, surface meteorological. 24 tapes, ship, upper air. 155 tapes, ship, tethered balloon. 41 tapes, ship, oceanographic. 58 tapes, ship, radar (photographic and digital). 6 tapes, ship, radiation. 3 tapes, ship, navigation. 1 tape, buoy, cyclesonde (c-scale) (d-type). 2 tapes, buoy, other c-scale (e-or f-type). 1 tape, buoy, wave (g-or h-type). 1 tape, buoy, u.s. current (k-type). 4 tapes, buoy, meteorological. 136 tapes, aircraft, general. 2 tapes, aircraft, flight level meteorology. 1 tape, aircraft, cloud physics and/or particle/aerosol samplers. 46 tapes, aircraft gust probe. 2 tapes, aircraft, dropsonde. 5 tapes, aircraft, other. digital data available for internatioinal processed and 17 tapes, general. 1 tape, land station, surface. 1 tape, ship, general. 2 tapes, ship, surface meteorology. 14 tapes, ship, upper air. 2 tapes, satellite, cloud displacement vectors. Digital data available for national holdings (raw data inventories. 52 tapes, general. U.S.A. Lineage information for: dataset
Lineage Statement A coalition of dozens of international organizations, under the auspices of the WMO, collected the data during the summer of 1974. A subset of the data was sent to the NOAA archive due to its status as the World Data Center-A for Meteorology.

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
