State of the Climate Monthly Overview - Global Snow & Ice

browse graphicSample Graph of Arctic Sea Ice Extent
The State of the Climate is a collection of periodic summaries recapping climate-related occurrences on both a global and national scale. The State of the Climate Monthly Overview - Global Snow & Ice report provides a global view of snow and ice, placing the data into a historical perspective. Because the Northern Hemisphere has the vast majority of the planet's seasonal snow cover, the report focuses on the Northern Hemisphere snow cover extent. In addition to snow cover, sea ice extents in both hemispheres are included. Annual reports are available from 2002 with some monthly reports in 2005 and 2006. Regular monthly reports begin in 2007. Not all topics are covered in each report and level of detail varies.

Use Constraints

  • Please note that State of the Climate reports are based upon operational datasets. The official operational datasets chosen for the report can and do change over time. The nature of these changes can be evolutionary, such as addition of previously-missing data or changes due to quality-assurance algorithms. Changes may also be revolutionary, in that a new version of an operational dataset, or a different dataset altogether, are adopted for official use. In any of these cases, the values presented in the State of the Climate reports reflect those known at the time, using the official dataset at the time. Values are not updated or edited within past reports, unless otherwise noted, even if the underlying official dataset has since changed.
Fees
  • In most cases, electronic downloads of the data are free. However, fees may apply for custom orders, data certifications, copies of analog materials, and data distribution on physical media.

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
