Western Pacific Typhoon Aircraft Fixes

Western Pacific typhoon aircraft reconnaissance data from the years 1946 - 1965 and 1978, excluding 1952, were transcribed from original documents, or copy of original documents, into a spreadsheet. Microfilm and paper documents were inspected for reconnaissance aircraft fixes and other data collected during flight. Data was collected from reports such as, tropical cyclone consolidated reports, annual typhoon reports, storm summary and life history of the typhoon reports, and aircraft weather code charts. Unfortunately, data for the year of 1952 could not be found, data for the year of 1955 is very limited, and data for the year of 1978 was incomplete in its digitized format. This dataset is a compilation of datasets that are present in paper and microfilm format located at Asheville's National Climatic Data Center archive, but is not easily accessible to the public. Part of the dataset also exists, and is available to the public at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center website in a pdf format. However, those data are not available in a digitized format.

Purpose This transcription of Western Pacific typhoon aircraft reconnaissance data from paper and microfilm format into a digital spreadsheet will guarantee the preservation of the data for future generations, as well as offer easier access for data analysis. The transcription of the data may also supplement data already available at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center and other agencies across the globe, as well as provide a resource for more detailed studies.

Lineage information for: dataset
Lineage Statement This dataset is a compilation of datasets that are present in paper and microfilm format located at Asheville's National Climatic Data Center archive, but is not easily accessible to the public. The data is quality controlled to a certain extent. The raw data was left intact and was transcribed as it appeared in the original documents. However, certain data was excluded in order to better data analysis. Data containing ineligible characters or incomplete missions were excluded from the raw data and are not included in the current dataset. Data for the year of 1952 that pertains to this project could not be located at this time. Data for the year of 1955, also pertaining to this project, is very limited and incomplete since it could not be found in the archives. Data for the year of 1978 was incomplete. Discovery of new data pertaining to these years may later be included into the project.

Processing Steps
  • Data that included any of the characteristics described below were excluded from the raw data and not included in the current dataset. 1) When the latitude or longitude of the fix could not be read. Example: "lon x.3". 2) When there was no data other than the name of the storm. 3) When there is no record of time and fix. 4) When the speed of the storm could not be read. Example: "Speed of storm 10.?". 5) When the mission was said to be aborted. 6) When the storm was not found or there was no evidence of closed circulation. 7) When the only information available was the unit, remarks, and number of observations. 8) When the only information available was in the remarks. 9) When no eye was observed.
Rationale: Certain data was excluded in order to better data analysis.
