**Please note, this dataset has been superseded by a newer version (see below). Users should not use this version except in rare cases (e.g., when reproducing previous studies that used this version).** The Hurricane Satellite (HURSAT) from derived International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) B1 observations of tropical cyclones worldwide data consist of raw satellite observations. The data derive from the global constellation of geostationary satellites (GOES, Meteosat, MS, and FY2 series) spanning 1978 through 2009. The data include infrared window, visible and other channels available from the satellite instruments. Hurricane database (HURDAT) and best track information, from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), were temporally-interpolated to match the satellite data resolution. The satellite data were then gridded to 8km, with grid centers fixed on the tropical cyclone center of circulation at 3-hour intervals. Data include hurricanes from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean Basins. Data are provided in a convenient NetCDF format which is self-documenting and follows standard storage and metadata conventions. Since the B1 data in general consists of many different formats a uniform B1 format (B1U) was developed to contain all the data, but in a consistent format. The B1U format is a flat binary format with headers providing metadata along with the imagery. Version 5 supersedes all other versions.

Lineage information for: dataset
Lineage Statement IBTrACS v03r02 were used to locate potential SSMI overflights. When SSMI was nearby, the 6-hourly storm track was interpolated to a position coincident with the SSMI observation. The satellite data were then interpolated to 8km. NetCDF files also contain the swath data at the native satellite resolution

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
