Russian Federation Snow Depth and Ice Crust Surveys

Russian Federation Snow Depth and Ice Crust Surveys, dataset DSI-9808, contains routine snow surveys that run throughout the cold season every 10 days (every five days during the intense snowmelt) at 517 meteorological stations in Russia for 1966 - 2009. Snow surveys were run separately along all types of environment typical for the site for 1 to 2 km, (fields, forest). At each 10 (forest) to 20 (field) meters the observer made snow depth measurements and at each 100 to 200 meters a more comprehensive suite of measurements is made. The dataset is archived as a single tar file that contains a station list, a data description document, and the data.

Lineage information for: dataset
Lineage Statement Surveys in the dataset run separately along all types of environments typical for the site for 1 to 2 km. At each 10 (forest) to 20 (field) meters the observer makes snow depth measurements, and at each 100 to 200 meters a more comprehensive suite of measurements is made which includes describing the current snow cover properties and characteristics of snow and ice crust. The snow cover extent over the near-station territory and the character of snow cover are determined visually in the morning hours of observations.

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
