Global Surface Warming Hiatus Analysis Data
Hiatus Analysis
These data were used to conduct the study of the global surface warming hiatus, an apparent decrease in the upward trend of global surface temperatures since 1998. The data are from 1880-2014 for global land, ocean, and land-ocean areas. The data include both gridded, time series, uncorrected and corrected data. An additional analysis specific to the Arctic is included. There is an Old Analysis and New Analysis; the old being the current operational version running at NCEI at the time. The New analysis uses ERSSTv4 and land surface air temperature data from the ISTI Databank with adjustments applied using the algorithm operational for GHCN-M v3. There are files in the Old Analysis and New Analysis containing the global 5X5 degree gridded anomalies. Anomalies are based on the climatology from 1971 to 2000.

Purpose | The datasets were used in an analysis of the so-called global warming hiatus that was extensively discussed in many journal articles and the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report. The results of the analysis are available in the Karl et al., 2015 Science journal article. |

Lineage Statement | Data used to conduct the study of the global surface warming hiatus using global annual and monthly average anomalies from 1880-2014 for land, ocean, and land&ocean areas. The inputs consist of adjusted land station data and metadata used in data from GHCN-Monthly version 3.2.2; monthly gridded mean temperature anomalies on a 5X5 degree grid; 2X2 degree gridded sea surface temperatures and anomalies from the ERSST v3b analysis; 2X2 degree gridded sea surface temperatures and anomalies from the ERSST v4 analysis with and without bias corrections. |
