Thermographs

EV2 - Thermographs

browse graphicImage example
The Thermograph data collection consists primary of weekly circular charts recording continuous temperature at a given station. The collection also includes hygrothermographs, which are long rectangular charts which also capture humidity on the same chart. There are hundreds of thousands of thermograph charts in physical media. The online collection only contains a subset of this massive collection. The bulk of the records spans the entire 20th century, although there are records that fall outside this time period.

Purpose Thermographs can be used to show the rate of temperature and (for hygrothermographs) humidity change over time in a given location. This information can be useful to many industries, including energy and engineering.
Use Limitations
  • Controlled user access to the EV2 system. Thermographs were generally created at stations that also took hourly weather observations, limiting the value of the thermograph to inter-hour temperature readings.

Use Constraints
  • Cite this dataset when used as a source.
  • Use liability: NOAA and NCEI cannot provide any warranty as to the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of furnished data. Users assume responsibility to determine the usability of these data. The user is responsible for the results of any application of this data for other than its intended purpose.
Access Constraints
  • Distribution liability: NOAA and NCEI make no warranty, expressed or implied, regarding these data, nor does the fact of distribution constitute such a warranty. NOAA and NCEI cannot assume liability for any damages caused by any errors or omissions in these data. If appropriate, NCEI can only certify that the data it distributes are an authentic copy of the records that were accepted for inclusion in the NCEI archives.
Fees
  • In most cases, electronic downloads of the data are free. However, fees may apply for custom orders, data certifications, copies of analog materials, and data distribution on physical media.
Lineage information for: dataset
Lineage Statement NWS Stations were equipped with hygrothermograph machines. Records were sent to the NOAA Archive to ensure long-term stewardship of the data records. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, there was an effort to scan and digitize as many analog records as possible, to ensure better accessibility to records. A subset of the Archive's Thermograph collection was scanned during that time.
Processor
  • NCDC Climate Data Modernization Program
Processing Steps
  • Scanned as JPG and TIF
Rationale: To digitize collection in order to make available online.
Processing Environment Paper forms captured digitally using various types of scanning equipment. All forms were scanned using a minimum of 300 dpi (standard archive quality).

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
