Geostationary Satellite (GOES) Images

EV2 - Geostationary Satellite Images

browse graphicSample GOES image
Visible and Infrared satellite imagery taken from radiometer instruments on SMS (ATS) and GOES satellites in geostationary orbit. These satellites produced "full-disk" images, centered over the equator at their longitudinal orbit. Also included are sector images, zoomed images of a portion of the full-disk. Image files are created by scanning hard-copy prints, 10"x10" negatives and microfilm held in the NOAA archives. Period of record for available imagery is May 1974-December 1989.

Purpose In the late 1990s NCDC realized the need to host digital images of weather and climate records on the internet. As a result, EV2 was developed as a key system for providing access to the millions of original source data images in the NCDC archives. With its upload and index capability, EV2 also enables the continuation of NCDC's commitment to make more of its weather and climate data available online so that users across the world can view climate and weather records held in the NCDC archives.
Use Limitations
  • Controlled user access to the EV2 system

If appropriate, NCEI can only certify that the data it distributes are an authentic copy of the records that were accepted for inclusion in the NCEI archives.
Fees
  • In most cases, electronic downloads of the data are free. However, fees may apply for custom orders, data certifications, copies of analog materials, and data distribution on physical media.
Lineage information for: dataset
Lineage Statement Limited scanning activities at NCDC contribute to the image repository. Partnerships with other NOAA line offices and international weather services have contributed to the broad and global nature of digitally imaged records available from the NCDC.
Processor
  • NCDC Archive staff
Processing Steps
  • Scanned as JPG or PDF
Rationale: To digitize collection in order to make available online.
Processing Environment Paper forms and negative images captured digitally using various types of scanning equipment. All forms should be scanned using a minimum of 300 dpi (standard archive quality).

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
