Preciptation Climatologies

browse graphicPublisher logo
In the mid-1970s, the National Climate Center used precipitation data to calculate various climatology products, studying the climatic probability of precipitation. Products created include: precipitable water tabulations, estimating the amount of water available to form precipitation at varying pressure levels; daily singularity studies, estimating the likelihood of precipitation amounts under certain circumstances such as temperature thresholds; and daily, weekly, monthly, and annual precipitation probabilities. The collection is stored on paper, but can be digitized upon request.

Lineage information for: dataset
Lineage Statement All data were calculated by the National Climate Center, later the National Climatic Data Center. The Precipitation Climatologies collection incorporated the U.S. Weather Cooperative observer precipitation data available in the archive. Raw data were captured on COOP forms, then transferred to punch cards (Card Decks 486, 345), and then digitized in the 1970s/1980s.

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
