Cape Kennedy Weather Data

Weather Observations - Cape Kennedy

Digitized data taken from original weather observations taken at Cape Kennedy Air Force Station, Florida. Elements recorded are wind speed and direction, temperature, dew point, pressure, and possibly more. Observations were taken every three hours. Records are contained in standard 80 character record lengths. The reference manual to indicate the individual fields and their lengths has not been found. It is possible to identify most of the fields, but some, particularly later in the record, have not been identified.

Purpose Data were collected as part of standard Surface Weather Observations conducted by the United States Air Force at locations all around the world. This dataset was created in order to facilitate an analysis of cloud cover frequency at Cape Kennedy, FL. From the analysis, a report was produced the probabilities for launched vehicles to be tracked during their ascent. Documentation sates that data were analyzed for the period 1956-61. However, the period of record for this dataset is Oct. 1961-Sept. 1962, indicating that it may have been created for the purpose of adding another year of data for analysis.

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
