This data set contains an operational sensor data record (SDR) from the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) instrument on board the Suomi-NPP satellite. CrIS is a Fourier Transform Spectrometer that provides high resolution infrared spectra across the short-wave, medium-wave, and long-wave infrared. Besides the principal temperature and moisture soundings needed for weather forecasting, CrIS will provide useful information on cloud top height and ice/water phase as well as the optical thickness and effective ice particle radius of thin cirrus clouds. Cirrus cloud property variability can have a dramatic impact on climate change. It is also important to note that CrIS can provide carbon monoxide and ozone tropospheric column content information needed for air quality monitoring and prediction. Radiance emissions by the major greenhouse gases (i.e., H2O, CO2, O3, CH4, and CO) are also to be monitored by the CrIS. By default, CrIS SDR data obtained from the Comprehensive Large Array-Data Stewardship System (CLASS) are distributed as aggregated files of four 86-second granules in HDF5 file format with metadata attributes.

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235.
