This dataset contains a high quality operational Environmental Data Record (EDR) of Sea Ice Concentration (SIC) and Ice Surface Temperature (IST) from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument onboard the Suomi-NPP satellite and is produced by the NOAA Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS). This daily product identifies ice cover and estimates ice concentration and ice surface temperature over water surfaces for clear (cloud-free) pixels. No land ice applications are included. The product also includes quality information which provides support information on the quality of ice estimates. The algorithm utilizes VIIRS visible bands I1 (0.640 micron), I2 (0.865 micron), I3 (1.61 micron), M5 (0.672 micron), M7 ( 0.862 micron), M10 (1.602 micron), M15 (10.729 micron), and M16 (11.845 micron) at a gridded spatial resolution of 1 kilometer. The VIIRS SIC and IST products distributed by the NESDIS Data Exploitation system (NDE) and obtained from the Comprehensive Large-Array Stewardship System (CLASS) are distributed in single 86-second granules in NetCDF-4 format with metadata attributes included.

Purpose Sea Ice Concentration and Ice Surface Temperature has profound socioeconomic value due to its role in water resources and its impact on transportation, fisheries, hunting, herding, and agriculture. It also plays a significant role in climate studies, and is critical for accurate weather forecasts.
Use Limitations
  • Ice concentration is not retrieved if less than 10% of all pixels in a search window is covered by ice, in which tie-point reflectance or surface temperature of pure ice can not be determined.

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
