U.S. Coastal Relief Model - Southern California Version 2

browse graphic
NGDC's U.S. Coastal Relief Model (CRM) provides a comprehensive view of the U.S. coastal zone integrating offshore bathymetry with land topography into a seamless representation of the coast. The CRM spans the U.S. East and West Coasts, the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii, reaching out to, and in places even beyond, the continental slope. Bathymetric and topographic data sources include: NGDC's NOS hydrographic surveys and multibeam bathymetry; the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); and other federal government agencies and academic institutions. Bathymetric contours from the International Bathymetric Chart of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico project were also used. Digital elevation models (DEMs) of the Great Lakes, Southern Alaska, and high-resolution DEMs of U.S. coastal communities and territories are also available.

Supplemental Information:
The vertical datum for the source bathymetric data was generally mean sea level (MSL), but NGDC Tsunami Inundation DEMs were referenced to North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88). Source topographic data were also in either MSL or NAVD 88. The differences between these datums have been corrected to MSL, however the elevation values may not be as accurate as you might like or need. Assume a vertical accuracy no better than 1 meter for any elevation values in the CRM.
Purpose: To provide long-term scientific data stewardship for the Nation's geophysical data, ensuring quality, integrity, and accessibility.

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.

Processing Steps
  • 2013-05-30T00:00:00 - All datasets obtained by NGDC were converted to common horizontal and vertical datums of NAD 83 geographic and MSL, respectively, using FME or ArcGIS. They were also converted to common file format, ESRI point shapefiles or digital rasters, for visualization and inspection.
  • 2013-06-03T00:00:00 - Datasets were visually inspected with ArcGIS and QT Modeler for identification and editing of data anomalies. Datasets were then compared with overlapping datasets to ensure data consistency.
  • 2013-06-25T00:00:00 - xyz files of the bathymetric data were surfaced using GMT's 'surface' tool onto a 3 arc-second grid that interpolated to fill empty cells. Values over 0 meters in elevation were not used. The resulting Arc ASCII grid was imported into ArcGIS and clipped to the coastline to remove values over land.
  • 2013-07-05T00:00:00 - xyz files for each input dataset were gridded using MB-System's 'mbgrid' tool, which utilizes a high-tension spline interpolation method to fill grid cells with no input elevation values. Preferential weighting was given to more recent, higher-accuracy datasets. Gridding was performed in individual 1 degree by 1 degree tiles, each with a 5% data buffer. The grids were imported in ArcGIS and seamlessly merged to create the final DEM.
