Supplemental Information
Only NOS hydrographic survey data were used in DEM development. Other sources of bathymetry may exist within DEM boundaries.
Purpose The objective of this project is to update NOAA NOS Estuarine Bathymetry Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), gridded representations of bathymetry for various estuaries in the United States, that were initially created in 1998 by the now defunct NOS Special Projects Office. Although these data still represent the “best available” gridded depictions of bathymetry in some locations, they are primarily based on antiquated historical data and do not include many modern survey data, in particular, high resolution BAG format hydrographic data. NCEI will identify more recent NOS hydrographic survey data if available and update existing DEMs compliant with NOAA Data Directives and meeting the requirements for Data Management, Discoverability, Accessibility, Documentation, Readability, and Data Preservation and Stewardship as per the Big Earth Data Initiative (BEDI).
Use Limitations
  • Not to be used for navigation. Although these data are of high quality and useful for planning and modeling purposes, they are not suitable for navigation. For navigation, please refer to the NOS nautical chart series.
  • Produced by the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. Not subject to copyright protection within the United States.

Processing Steps
  • Hydrographic survey data were downloaded from NCEI, if needed, converted to WGS 84 geographic horizontal datum. Older soundings were supplanted by more recent soundings and the collection of data points were visually inspected for errors or outliers. An xyz point file version of the CUSP shoreline with 3 meter point spacing was generated and used as source data with elevation value set to zero as well as used as a mask for the final gridded data product. All data points were surfaced using GMT software to generate a 10 meter pre-surface to ensure no NoData cells in the final DEM. The pre-surface was converted to xyz points and combined with the original soundings and coastlne and gridded with MB-System.
