This data set contains analytical data from samples acquired from the Baltimore Canyon (Mid-Atlantic) area of the
Outer Continental Shelf, U.S. East Coast, by the U.S. Geological Survey, Office of Marine Geology, Woods Hole, Mass., during the first
year of environmental assessment work funded by the Bureau of Land Management (June 1975 - August 1976), on cruises of the ships
Atlantis II, Advance II, Columbus Iselin, Pierce, and Gillis. The data set contains ten files. The first file ("station data") contains
location and collection documentation for the subsequent files which contain the various analytical data. Data files include: baltcanyon.1.txt -
collection documentation, baltcanyon.2.txt - grain size of sediments, baltcanyon.3.txt - high molecular weight hydrocarbons, baltcanyon.4.txt -
hydrocarbon contaminant and intercalibration samples, baltcanyon.5.txt - trace metals, baltcanyon.6.txt - carbon content, baltcanyon.7.txt -
suspended sediment (see note), baltcanyon.8.txt - suspended matter, baltcanyon.9.txt - clay mineralogy, baltcanyon.10.txt - carbon-14 dates,
readme.txt - full documentation for above.

Supplemental Information
The first file contains location and collection documentation for the subsequent files which contain the various analytical data. The station data in the first file are keyed to the contents of the subsequent files (except file 4) by a key number. The key number merely serves as a link between the station data and various analytical data to enable the data lines to be kept shorter than 130 characters, the usual capacity of a line printer. In many cases, the key number will appear in two or three of the data files, indicating that several types of analyses were performed on subsamples of the same prime sample. Similarly, repetition of a key number within a single file indicates that analyses were performed on parts of a single prime sample - grain size analyses at intervals down a single core, for example. The core intervals or in some cases, sample depth within water columns are included in the analytical data files.
Purpose These data are intended for environmental studies.

Lineage Statement These data were contributed by the originator directly to NOAA's former National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), but may be part of a larger compilation archived as oceanographic data by NCEI. Data were received from the USGS on an ASCII nine track magnetic tape containing 10 files, each with a different record length. File contents: 1) collection documentation, 500 records; 2) grain size (not 073), 620 records; 3) Hi molecular weight hydrocarbons, 143 records; 4) hydrocarbon contamination/intercalibration, 52 records; 5) trace metals, 150 records; 6) carbon content, 40 records; 7) suspended sediment, 29 records; 8) suspended matter, 213 records; 9) clay mineralogy, 34 records; 10) carbon 14 dates, 17 records. This submission was a correction of previous update MA-1. Associated 073 grain size are part of MGG03995007.

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
