Marine Geology and Geophysics (MGG)
MGG03995004, MGG03995005, MGG03995006, MGG03995007
The Marine Ecosystems Analysis (MESA) Program, New York Bight Study was funded by NOAA and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The Atlas was a historical compilation of surficial sediment grain size analyses in the NY Bight from 1957-1979. 5,928 cores, grabs, and dredges are included from multiple cruises: (BCTS, BLM01B-BLM08B, FIM01-FIM14, HSV, LEI-A - LEI-M, OCSS, Quart1 - Quart5, RBCI02 - RBCI04, RBCII1 - RBCII4, and RECON). Data are in the historic 073 format. Data include collecting institution, ship, cruise, sample id, latitude/longitude, date of collection, water depth, sampling device, method of analysis, sample weight, sampled interval, raw weight percentages of sediment, within a given phi range. Some samples also have percentages of total gravel, sand, silt, clay, and statistical measurements such as mean, median, skewness, kurtosis, and standard deviation of grain size. These data are part of the larger NGDC Seafloor Sediment Grain Size Database. In addition to grain size data included in the atlas, this data set also contains related sediment geochemistry in the MESA 001 format, and some originator's grain size data in the MESA 003 format which were returned to the originator for error correction and may not be represented in the 073 format data.

The atlas is a historic compilation of all grain size data available for the MESA/NY Bight area at the time. NCEI archives a microfiche copy of the atlas, but it is interpretive only and not in the inventory. Cruises in the atlas include BCTS, BLM01B through BLM08B, FIM01 through FIM14, HSV, LEI-A through LEI-M, OCSS, QUART1 through QUART5, RBCI02 through RBCI04, RBCII1 through RBCII4, and RECON; other cruises in the atlas are not defined and additional cruises include MESA geochemistry data not in the atlas. Some cruises are replacements for data previously returned for correction, see lineage/processing notes.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy
The horizontal accuracy of data values is approximately .001 degree of latitude/longitude.
Reliability
Quality control was performed by the originator. NCEI performed basic out-of-range location testing and testing for conformance to the 073 grain size format, these data were marginal after revision.
Final resubmission of originator's data as a single historic compilation were received through the former National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) in February of 1980. Data were received on nine track magnetic tape in EBCDIC form as 80 character records blocked to 4000 characters per block. 22,566 records total for 5,961 samples were processed into the NGDC Seafloor Sediment Grain Size Database after extensive revision and the data are still not of high quality. Artifical 073 File IDs were created using the first six digits of the cruise/project to replace null fields. Data included BLM01B through BLM08B formerly on a VIMS submission, and also USGS (Red Bailey) 073 data from MGG06995003. Data contributed by the originator to NOAA's former NODC may be part of a larger compilation archived as oceanographic data. Related grain size data in the MESA 003 format (MGG03995004-5) and geochemical data in the MESA 001 format (MGG03995006) are included in this data set (see lineage description field for complete information).
Previously received data replaced by this submission of MGG03995007 include data in the MESA 003 format for: Ferrel cruises SUMP1 and SUMP4 (MGG03305001, MGG03305002), Albatross cruise SUMP2 (MGG03375001), Venture cruise SUMP3 (MGG03235001), Delaware IV cruise SUMP5 (MGG03385001), and Advance II cruise SUMP6 (MGG03395001). Data were returned to AOML for correction and re-received as AOML MGG03995004 (Sump1-6 of the Ferrel, Albatross IV, Venture, Delaware IV, Advance II) and NMFS MGG03995005 (Albatross IV A-73-1, A7401, Oregon II O-73-1, O-74-1, Delaware II D7409) along with NMFS MESA geochemistry in the 001 format for those and additional cruises (DO 3/1, 4/1, and Delaware I, DE1/1, 2/1, 3/1, 4/1, DE5,6,7, D7409) and NMFS MGG03995006 (Atlantic Twin A73-1, Rorgual R73-2, Oregon II 73-1, Dolphin DO 1/1, 2/1) - all of which again had too many errors to process into the master grain size database. Additional data replaced by MGG03995007 include BLM01B Columbus Iselin 10/27/75-11/06/75 (MGG57035001) 1,298 records; BLM02B G.W. Pierce 2/19/76-3/23/76 (MGG57015002) 2,606 records; BLM03B J.M.Gilliss 6/14/76-6/24/76 (MGG57025001) 1,298 records; and BLM04B G.W. Pierce 8/14/76-9/2/76 (MGG57015001) 2,768 records, received on four nine track EBCDIC magnetic tapes, 109 character unblocked records, 1 file per tape - all sent back to the originator in 1977 for correction (resubmitted IDs MGG06595001, MGG06605001, MGG06605002, MGG06615001 were later combined into MGG03995007). In addition, some of the previously rejected BLM/OCS/Mid-Atlantic data: BLM05B H.J.W. Fay 11/3/76-11/18/76 (MGG57055001); BLM06B H.J.W. Fay 2/4/77-2/17/77 and 3/6/77-3/13/77 (MGG57055002); BLM07B H.J.W. Fay 5/30/77-6/5/77 (MGG57055003); BLM08B H.J.W.Fay 8/3/77-8/17/77 (MGG57055004) received in the MESA 003 format which failed quality control tests and were returned to NOAA/AOML for correction, were also included in the resubmitted MGG03995007. Many of the former MGG identifiers exist in the Marine Geology Inventory as data sets with no associated samples and are annotated as being in error/not for distribution.

NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information
NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
