This GIS data layer represents point coverage of seafloor sediment size and composition in Massachusetts territorial waters. The data were created by aggregating available sediment point data collected from the United States Geological Survey's (USGS) usSEABED, version 1.0, U.S. Geological Survey Data Series 118 (Reid 2005), the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Sediment data were collected between 1884 to 2008 from a variety of published and unpublished sediment texture and other geologic data. As such, the data has a variety of different horizontal accuracies and sampling and analysis methodologies. The dataset includes relative data quality for each point. More information regarding the compiled data sources and data quality assessment is available in Ford, K.H. and S.E. Voss. 2010. Seafloor sediment composition in Massachusetts determined using point data. Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries Technical Report, TR-45. 21pp.
These data were compiled for the creation of surficial sediment maps.
These spatial data were compiled by the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy
usSEABED metadata records state "Locational accuracy is dependent on the accuracy of the navigational technique from the individual data sources and may vary widely (e.g., from 0.005km (differential GPS) in more recent surveys to greater than 2 km based on radar, Loran, or dead reckoning in older surveys.) Users of the data should use their own criteria for assessing the accuracy of the locations." Other datasets included in this compilation that were collected within the past 10 years have a horizontal accuracy better than 30 meters.
Horizontal accuracy varies based on the type of positioning equipment used in each survey contained in this compilation.

Overlapping data points were checked to see if they had different dataset keys, different grain size values, different dates of sampling, or had other variables that indicated redundant samples. If the samples differed in any way such that a conclusive determination of redundancy could not be made, the samples were kept (because of the possibility that some samples were taken in the same place). Photographic data from the DMF Lobster Project were normalized to 100% total grain size. Duplicate points exist and samples with less than and greater than 100% total grain size exist. Samples that were found on land were manually identified and removed.

The multiple datasets were compiled and then clipped to encompass the area of Massachusetts territorial waters including Nantucket Sound and a 10km buffer. Samples that were found on land were manually identified and removed. Photographic data from the DMF Lobster Project were normalized to 100% total grain size. Substrate type percentages were used to create gravel-sand-mud classifications using Folk (1954) and Shepard/Schlee codes (see Hastings, Poppe, and Hathaway, 2000. Chapter 2 in USGS East-coast sediment analysis, USGS OFR 00-358). The SEDCLASS tool was not utilized; the classifications were done with a visual basic macro within Excel. The reason there are two Folk and Shepard classifications is 2-fold: 1) We could not repeat the Folk classification results that were in usSEABED, mostly because it appears that the %Gravel values were concatenated or rounded to the nearest whole number. Therefore, the "slightly gravelly" category could not be repeated (0.1% to 5% gravel). 2) We used the Gravel-Sand-Mud ternary diagrams, rather than trying to nest the Sand-Silt Clay ternary diagrams into the Gravel-Sand-Mud diagram. The Shepard/Schlee classification approach nests well, but in many datasets we don't have reliable sand-silt-clay information. The Folk classification does not appear to be designed for nesting.
The native coordinate system for the dataset is the geographic decimal degree coordinate system, North American Datum 1983 (NAD83). Corpscon 6.0.1 was used to convert to the Massachusetts State Plane Coordinate System, Mainland Zone (Fipszone 2001), meters. www.tec.army.mil
The Excel spreadsheet was utilized to create a point shapefile in ArcGIS 9.3 using Add X,Y Data tool and selecting the Easting and Northing columns. All attributes were then exported to a point shapefile using the Export Data tool.

NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information
NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
