The Oregon State University Marine Geology Repository (OSU-MGR)
is a partner in the Index to Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples (IMLGS) database, contributing
information to the IMLGS to help researchers discover geological samples curated in their facility.
The partner repository sends related data, documents, and imagery to NCEI for long-term archive,
but the originating institution is the definitive source of information related to their sample collection.
The OSU-MGR is located in the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS). It is a National
Science Foundation (NSF) supported curation facility for marine rock and sediment samples. The facility
contains over 41,000 cubic feet of refrigerated space and 1,100 cubic feet of -25 degrees C cold storage
and is well equipped for preservation and distribution of marine geological samples for scientific research and education.

Supplemental Information
The marine sediment and rock collection at the OSU Marine Geology Repository comes from all oceans. As of 2015 the OSU-MGR contains over 16,290 meters of sediment from 6,200 cores, more than 10,000 rocks from over 500 dredges, 2,200 Manganese Nodules and 1,600 sediment trap and 700 plankton tow samples. In recent years, the OSU-MGR has distributed about 10,000 samples per year to scientists throughout the world.
Additonal related data and information are available directly from the contributing institution, which is the authoritative and most current source of data and information related to their sample collection. The IMLGS contains a subset of summary metadata from the institutional database.
Dr. Hans Schroeder, former OSU Curator, participated in design of the original IMLGS. Dr. Richard Roberts, former University of Washington Curator, also participated in design of the original IMLGS. The UW collection was transferred to OSU when the UW repository closed.
Purpose The mission of the OSU-MGR is to facilitate research, education, and the advancement of scientific knowledge through access and use of their diverse collection of rock, lake, and marine sediment samples.

Use Constraints
  • Please consult the Curator before proposing to do research on any sample discovered through the IMLGS or the NCEI archive.
  • While every effort has been made to ensure that these data are accurate and reliable within the limits of the current state of the art, NOAA cannot assume liability for any damages caused by any errors or omissions in the data, nor as a result of the failure of the data to function on a particular system. NOAA makes no warranty, expressed or implied, nor does the fact of distribution constitute such a warranty.
Access Constraints
  • Sample metadata and most data/images are available online for free download. Additional, full-resolution images from the offline archive may be available. Contact NCEI for more information.

Lineage information for: dataset
Lineage Statement Data are received by NCEI on an intermittent basis from the repository. Incoming data are checked for adherence to controlled vocabularies, illegal data types in numeric fields, and out of range latitudes/longitudes. NCEI adds IGSNs/links to related resources, where known, and may perform cursory visual inspection of data for reasonableness, asking the originator for guidance on discrepancies. Preliminary processed data are placed in a test database for inspection by the originator, and iteratively corrected until the originator approves their publication to the production database. Data may also be updated/corrected at any time, at the originator's request.

Additonal related data and information are available directly from the contributing institution, which is the authoritative and most current source of data and information related to their sample collection. The IMLGS contains a subset of summary metadata from the institutional database.
