The Marine Geological Samples Laboratory (MGSL) of the Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO), University of Rhode Island
is a partner in the Index to Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples (IMLGS) database, contributing information to the IMLGS
to help researchers discover geological samples curated in their facility.
The partner repository also sends some related data, documents, and imagery to NCEI for long-term archive,
but the originating institution is the definitive source of information related to their sample collection.
The MGSL serves as the central repository for dredge rocks, deep-sea cores, grabs and land-based geological samples collected
by the Marine Geology and Geophysics group at GSO/URI. The facility is located on the Narragansett Bay Campus of the University
of Rhode Island in Narragansett, R.I. A large part of the funding for curatorial activities in the MGSL is obtained from the
Ocean Science Division of the National Science Foundation. The MGSL maintains a large collection of marine geological samples

Data Update Frequency: Irregular - URI contributes data to the NCEI archive and to the IMLGS as new samples are added to the MGSL collection and/or as new sample data are available for public release.
Supplemental Information:
The MGSL is a 6,000 square ft. facility on the Narragansett Bay Campus containing laboratories and storage space for the curation of marine geological samples. A major part of the building is devoted to the storage of dredge rocks and island/continent rock samples. These samples are stored in 12' high rows of dexidren steel racks. The other major area of sample storage consist of a 10,000 square ft. refrigerated room which houses the deep-sea sediment core collection and is maintained at a temperature of 3-4 degree C. In addition, the facility has 5 external refrigerated vans that house deep-sea cores and grab samples. The remaining area of the MGSL is subdivided into three laboratories and a curator's office. There are two labs for the processing of hard rocks (coarse and fine prep labs) where samples can be laid out for description and subsampling. A separate core lab is available for the description and sampling of sediment cores. This lab is also used for educational outreach and has been integrated with the Inner Space Center at GSO to showcase "telepresence" exploration and sampling of the ocean floor. Sample locations are grouped by Marsden Squares and a searchable Filemaker Pro 4.0 database is available for each of the major sample types: Sediment cores (collected by piston, gravity and box corers); Dredge rocks (collected by rock dredges towed behind a ship); Grab samples (collected by Shipek or other types of grab samplers); and Remotely operated vehicle (ROV) samples (precisely located on the seafloor).
Additonal related data and information are available directly from the contributing institution, which is the authoritative and most current source of data and information related to their sample collection. The IMLGS contains a subset of summary metadata from the institutional database.
Purpose: The main purpose of the MGSL is to assure that geological samples are properly stored, described, preserved and available for use by qualified investigators from both inside and outside the institution. Data and information are archived at NCEI to promote public access to research results and to increase their discoverability via the IMLGS.

Lineage Statement Data are received by NCEI on an intermittent basis from the repository. Incoming data are checked for adherence to controlled vocabularies, illegal data types in numeric fields, and out of range latitudes/longitudes. NCEI adds IGSNs/links to related resources, where known, and may perform cursory visual inspection of data for reasonableness, asking the originator for guidance on discrepancies. Preliminary processed data are placed in a test database for inspection by the originator, and iteratively corrected until the originator approves their publication to the production database. Data may also be updated/corrected at any time, at the originator's request.

    • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
