C-SCAMP Cruise Report #3 - C-BASS Cruise Report - 2016-04-CS04-C02 - RV Weatherbird II - April 07-12, 2016 (EK60). The Camera-Based Assessment Survey System (C-BASS) was used to image new areas around Madison-Swanson Marine Protected Area (MPA) located in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico (on the west Florida shelf) and also further the effort of having a long time series of transects in the MPA itself with the reef and ledge areas. In total 19h13m hours of video were collected along 158 km of transects.
Multibeam bathymetry data were collected to fill in gaps not covered by the previous mapping efforts of USF and USGS. This resulted in a complete high-resolution bathymetric map of the Madison-Swanson MPA.
Additionally, several promising areas were identified for future mapping and video assessment efforts. These areas were identified via prospecting lines performed during transit to and from the primary survey
region at Madison-Swanson.. Partially successful ping synchronization between the Seabat 7125 and EK60 echosounders was also achieved during this cruise.
The POS MV attitude data (pitch, roll and heave) were integrated into the EK60 to improve the quality of he data. A successful calibration of the EK60 was completed in Tampa Bay while the RV Weatherbird II was
anchored in approximately 8 meters (m) of water.
In summary, C-BASS data collection was less than anticipated due to a technical issue beyond in-situ repairs, but of no long term consequence to the project. However, the use of the multi-beam system went
far beyond what was anticipated and provided valuable benefit to the research community by completing a section within the Madison Swanson MPA where there has existed a mapping gap for several years. This
cruise also marked the first calibration of the EK60 performed exclusively without external guidance, with members of C-SCAMP and FIO collaborating for the operation, which demonstrated that regular
calibrations can be accomplished by the team.
The following objectives were identified for this survey cruise:
1. Collect towed video in areas of interest north and south of the Madison-Swanson Marine Protected Area (MPA) identified from multibeam bathymetry data previously collected by the US Geological
Survey (USGS) and Dr. David Naar of the University of South Florida (USF).
2. Re-image the reef and ledge areas in Madison-Swanson following the same transects from 2013 and 2014 cruises using the towed video.
3. Test the Reson Seabat 7125 multibeam echosounder on the RV Weatherbird II.
4. Operate the Reson Seabat 7125 to collect scouting lines for planning of future mapping cruises.
5. Calibrate the Simrad EK60 split-beam echosounder.
6. Investigate the feasibility of concurrently using the Reson and Simrad systems which requires synchronization of their pinging.
7. Collect periodic prospecting Bongo Net trawls for collaborative efforts.

The Simrad EK60 Scientific Sounder system is a new generation fishery researchtool, based on experience from the EK500. The new electronic hardware is combined with up to date PC processing and Windows operation. The EK60 provides facilities for accurate echo sounding, data storage, data analysis and reporting results. The system communication is through Ethernet, which gives flexibility in the location of the EK60 system units and allows easy access to data from other instruments or stations on a vessel network. A post processing software, BI60, is also included in the EK60 system.

Weatherbird II
The R/V Weatherbird II has been the flagship of the FIO fleet since February 2009 following its acquisition and renovation. The 115-foot, 194-ton vessel has since become one of the nationâs most storied research vessels after its repeated voyages to carry out scientific missions in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill catastrophe. The Weatherbird II is equipped with advanced laboratories, oceanographic devices and sensor technology designed to enable scientists and students to study and learn about various aspects of the oceanâs biological, chemical, geological and physical characteristics. Researchers use the vessel to support advanced studies on myriad of complex issues impacting global and coastal oceans, as well as life in the sea.
