The NEFSC bottom trawl survey is a fisheries independent, multi-species survey that provides the primary scientific data for fisheries assessments in the U.S. mid-Atlantic and New England regions. Two bottom trawl surveys are conducted each year, one in the spring and one in the autumn. The survey is a standardized, stratified random design, with stratification based on bathymetry and multiple trawl sites within each stratum. Trawl sites are selected randomly, but the overall ship path is south to north. The survey covers the continental shelf and U.S. exclusive economic zone (EEZ) from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina into the Canadian EEZ. The primary gear is a bottom trawl, with CTD, multifrequency echosounder, and a host of other scientific sensor data collected ancillary to the bottom trawl catches.
The NEFSC bottom trawl survey provides fisheries independent abundance and biological data for fisheries assessments along the U.S. east coast.

NOAA Ship Albatross IV (R 342)

creation
Albatross IV (AL)
The NOAA Ship Albatross IV conducted fishery and living marine resource research in support of NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Northeast Fisheries Science Center's (NEFSC), Woods Hole Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The ship's normal operating area was the Gulf of Maine, Georges Bank, and the continental shelf and slope from Southern New England to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Typical assessment work included groundfish surveys and Ecosystem Monitoring surveys. Research conducted from the Albatross IV provides an understanding of the physical and biological processes that control year class strength of key economical fish, shellfish and zooplankton species. The vessel was operated by NOAA's Office of Marine and Aviation Operations. The Albatross IV was decommissioned on 20 November 2008.

The Simrad EK60 Scientific Sounder system is a new generation fishery researchtool, based on experience from the EK500. The new electronic hardware is combined with up to date PC processing and Windows operation. The EK60 provides facilities for accurate echo sounding, data storage, data analysis and reporting results. The system communication is through Ethernet, which gives flexibility in the location of the EK60 system units and allows easy access to data from other instruments or stations on a vessel network. A post processing software, BI60, is also included in the EK60 system.
