EK60 Water Column Sonar Data Collected During DY1608
Acoustic-Trawl Survey of Walleye Pollock in the Eastern Bering Sea (DY1608, EK60). The Midwater Assessment and Conservation Engineering (MACE) program of NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) conducted an acoustic-trawl (AT) stock assessment survey on the eastern Bering Sea shelf during late spring/summer of 2016 to estimate the distribution and abundance of walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus). The survey was conducted 12 June to 17 August aboard NOAA Ship Oscar Dyson, a 64 meter stern trawler equipped with acoustic and oceanographic instrumentation. The vessel departed Dutch Harbor, Alaska on 12 June and returned to Dutch Harbor on 17 August. The cruise was completed in three legs (leg 1, 12 June to 3 July; leg 2, 7-25 July; leg 3, 29 July to 17 August), with all port calls in Dutch Harbor, Alaska.

Lineage Statement | The primary instrument for the survey was a Simrad EK60 split-beam echosounder system utilizing five frequencies (18, 38, 70, 120, and 200 kHz). The EK60 transducers installed on the Oscar Dyson are mounted on a deployable centerboard. The transducer draft settings in the EK60 software are nominally correct when the centerboard is fully extended (draft correction setting is 9.15 meters below the surface). When the centerboard is in the retracted position (transducers approximately flush with the vessel's keel), the transducers are nominally 6.1 meters below the surface. The EK60 echosounder system was calibrated at the start of the cruise in Captains Bay, Dutch Harbor, Alaska on 13 June, and again at the end of the cruise also in Captains Bay. |
