AMAPPS-Cetacean and Turtle Abundance Summer Survey (HB1403, EK60). The AMAPPS survey will primarily focus on beaked whale species, with the following objectives: 1) Develop a better understanding of beaked whale habitat use and site fidelity for abundance and monitoring of critical areas, 2) Quantify efficacy of passive acoustic monitoring for detection and abundance of these species, through controlled methodological tests and in comparison to a bottom-mounted recorders (AMAR), 3) Determine the distribution and relative abundance of plankton and prey species, 4) When possible, collect identification photographs and biopsy samples.
Document the relationship between the distribution and abundance of cetaceans, sea turtles, and sea birds within the study area relative to their physical and biological environment.

Kongsberg/Simrad instrument files (.raw or .wcd)
1
Kongsberg/Simrad .raw files are generated by ME70, EK60 or ES60 instruments. They contain power and optionally angular position data with each beam/frequency identified by an independent channel. See the Simrad interface specification manual for further information. The .wcd files are generated by Kongsberg EM302 or EM122 instruments. See Kongsberg documentation for more information.

Simrad EK60
singlebeam
The Simrad EK60 Scientific Sounder system is a new generation fishery researchtool, based on experience from the EK500. The new electronic hardware is combined with up to date PC processing and Windows operation. The EK60 provides facilities for accurate echo sounding, data storage, data analysis and reporting results. The system communication is through Ethernet, which gives flexibility in the location of the EK60 system units and allows easy access to data from other instruments or stations on a vessel network. A post processing software, BI60, is also included in the EK60 system.

NOAA Ship Henry B. Bigelow (R225)
Henry Bigelow (HB)
NOAA Ship Henry B. Bigelow is one of the most technologically advanced fisheries survey vessels in the world and it supports NOAA's mission to protect, restore and manage the use of living marine, coastal, and ocean resources through ecosystem-based management. Its primary objective is to study and monitor Northeast Marine Fisheries, throughout New England. The ship also observes weather, sea state, and other environmental conditions, conducts habitat assessments, and surveys marine mammal and marine bird populations.

Simrad ME70
multibeam
The Simrad ME70 is a high resolution scientific multibeam echo sounder
with very low sidelobe levels. It is dedicated for collection of data in the water
column. The multibeam echo sounder combines the large and flexible sampling volume of
the multibeam swath with the accuracy of the quantitative scientific echo sounder. A
bathymetric option is also available to provide a high resolution seabed mapping
capability, and the possibility to study the fish habitat.
