abstract: Mapping Essential Fish Habitat in the US Caribbean to Inform MPA Management (NF-16-01-PR, EK60). Scientists will collect high resolution multibeam and acoustic fisheries data in mid-water depths approximately 10 to 2000 meters so as to continue to characterize seafloor habitats within all U.S. States, Territories, and Commonwealths. The objective of this project is to collect a multibeam bathymetry dataset with 100% seafloor ensonification, along with multibeam backscatter suitable for seafloor characterization. Fishery acoustics data will be collected to characterize broad-scale fish abundance, biomass, and utilization patterns, as well as to locate and document fish spawning aggregations. Multibeam data will be collected to conform to IHO Order 1 (<100m) and Order 2 (>100m) accuracy standards. The strategies developed for each survey area will take into account the minimum depths, general bathymetry, and time allotment. The delineation and identification of seafloor habitats will be assisted by the use of a moderate-depth Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The vehicle has video and frame camera capability to depths of 300 meters and will be used for transect sampling within areas mapped during this mission. Two Slocum Glider G2 will be deployed during the duration of the project to collect oceanographic data and passive fish acoustics in the study region.
purpose: The purpose of the cruise will be to collect swath bathymetry, acoustical backscatter, ROV optical validation, fishery acoustics, and Slocum Glider deployments within coastal waters of St. Croix and St. Thomas, USVI.

description: Nancy Foster, one of the most operationally diverse platforms in the NOAA fleet, was originally built as a Navy yard torpedo test (YTT) craft. In 2001, the Navy transferred the vessel to NOAA who outfitted the ship to conduct coastal research along the U.S. Atlantic/Gulf coasts, and the Caribbean. Nancy Foster is named for Dr. Nancy Foster, in tribute to her outstanding contributions in advancing NOAA's mission through her leadership within the National Marine Fisheries Service and National Ocean Service from 1986 until 2000. Nancy Foster supports applied research for NOAA's National Ocean Service and Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. Operations include the characterization of habitats in our nation's National Marine Sanctuaries and coastal waters, water quality studies, maritime heritage surveys, and coral reef assessments. The vessel employs state of the art navigation and propulsion systems resulting in high quality and efficient data collection with cutting edge technology including high resolution multibeam sonars, split beam sonars, and an array of water quality sensors and CTDs. Additional capabilities include water, sediment, and core sampling, sub-bottom profiling, diving with air and NITROX, ROV and AUV operations, small boat operations and servicing oceanographic/atmospheric surface and subsurface buoys..

description: The Seapoint Chlorophyll Fluorometer (SCF) is a high-performance, low power instrument for in situ measurements of chlorophyll. Its small size, very low power consumption, high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, 6000 meter depth capability, and open or pump-through sample volume options provide the power and flexibility to measure chlorophyll in a wide variety of conditions. The SCF uses modulated blue LED lamps and a blue excitation filter to excite chlorophyll. The fluorescent light emitted by the chlorophyll passes through a red emission filter and is detected by a silicon photodiode. The low level signal is then processed using synchronous demodulation circuitry which generates an output voltage proportional to chlorophyll concentration. The SCF may be operated with or without a pump. The sensing volume may be left open to the surrounding water, or, with the use of the supplied cap, can have water pumped through it. Two control lines allow the user to set the range to one of four options. These lines may be hardwired or microprocessor controlled to provide a suitable range and resolution for a given application. The sensor is easily interfaced with data acquisition packages; a 5 ft. pigtail is supplied.

The low power requirements make it ideal for applications where battery drain is a concern. Range is chosen by two digital lines which can be hard wired or microprocessor controlled, thereby choosing the appropriate range and resolution for measurement of extremely clean to very turbid waters. The offset voltage is within 1 mV of zero and requires no adjustment across gains. The unique optical design confines the sensing volume to within 5 cm of the sensor allowing near-bottom measurements and minimizing errant reflections in restricted spaces. The sensor is easily interfaced with data acquisition packages; a 5 ft pigtail is supplied.
