abstract: Southeast Fishery-Independent Survey (PC1304, ME70). The Southeast Fishery-Independent Survey (SEFIS) was created by the National Marine Fisheries Service in 2010 and operates out of the NOAA Beaufort Laboratory. The survey conducts fishery-independent sampling and related applied research, focusing on the assessment of spatial variability in distribution and abundance of marine fish species within the snapper-grouper complex, via data collected from fish traps, video cameras, and acoustics. The NOAA ship Pisces departed Cape Canaveral, FL on 12 June 2013 for a SEFIS research cruise in continental shelf and shelf-break waters off the southeastern U.S. During this survey, 258 sq km of multibeam data were collected from 40 discrete areas between 28.2 Deg N and 32.1 Deg N. A total of 399 concomitant trap-camera samples were collected. SEFIS program website: http://www.sefsc.noaa.gov/labs/beaufort/ecosystems/sefis/
purpose: Increase the spatial footprint and sample size of fishery-independent sampling in US south Atlantic continental shelf waters (roughtly between Cape Canaveral, FL and Savannah, GA). Mapping data are used to improve survey design and to expand knowledge of hardbottom habitats in the southeast US.

description: The Pisces supports NOAA's mission to protect, restore, and manage the use of living marine, coastal, and ocean resources through ecosystem-based management. Her primary objective is to study, monitor, and collect data on a wide range of sea life and ocean conditions, primarily in U.S. waters from the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and South Atlantic to North Carolina. The region includes important commercial and recreational fisheries, and is one of the world's best known and most productive marine areas. The data collected by the ship is used by scientists who study variation in ocean conditions and sea life to better inform the nation's decision makers about such issues as sustainable fisheries, ecosystem structure and function, fish habitats and habitat restoration, coral reefs, and protected species status. Pisces also observes weather, sea state, and other environmental conditions, conducts habitat assessments, and survey marine mammal and marine bird populations.

description: The FE-700 is a result of over 50 years of Furuno's vast range of experience and advanced microelectronics technology fields in developing echo sounders, sonars, and underwater application equipment and systems. This echo sounder is a breakthrough over the conventional paper eating sounders; there are no consumable items. The purpose of the echo sounder is to provide safe navigation by detecting the clearance below the ship (particularly in shallow waters) as required on the SOLAS Convention ships by the new IMO standards.

description: The SBE 21 accurately determines sea surface temperature and conductivity from underway vessels. Data is simultaneously stored in memory and transmitted to a computer serial port, allowing independent data logging and real-time data acquisition. Typically mounted near the ship's seawater intake, the SBE 21 is connected to an AC-powered interface box positioned near the computer. The interface box provides power and an isolated data interface, and contains a NMEA 0183 port for appending navigation information to the data stream.

type: Wind Speed and Direction
description: The Wind Monitor MA is an accurate and reliable wind sensor specifically designed for the rigors of the marine environment. The wind speed sensor is a four blade helicoid propeller. Unique transducer produces a pulse signal without electrical contacts or slip rings. The wind direction sensor is a durable molded vane. Vane angle is sensed by a precision potentiometer housed in a sealed chamber. All materials are carefully selected for corrosion resistance and maximum durability in the harsh marine environment. Ceramic bearings are used throughout. The instrument mounts on standard 1 inch pipe. Separate signal conditioning circuits are available to provide voltage or current signals when needed. Each is supplied in a weatherproof junction box with mounting hardware.
