NCEI Accession 0000183 includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from NOAA Ship MALCOLM BALDRIGE in the North Pacific Ocean, South Pacific Ocean and Southern Oceans (> 60 degrees South) from 1990-02-22 to 1990-04-16. These data include CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), DELTA CARBON-13, DELTA HELIUM-3, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON (DIC), HELIUM, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NEON, NITRATE, SALINITY, Tritium (Hydrogen isotope) and WATER TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD, Coulometer for DIC measurement and bottle.

These data were collected by Richard A. Feely, M. F. Lamb and D. Wisegarver of US DOC; NOAA; OAR; Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory as part of the CARINA_CGC_90 and CGC-90_32MW19900222 data set. CDIAC associated the following cruise ID(s) with this data set: 3175CG90_1 and CGC_90

The CARINA (CARbon dioxide IN the Atlantic Ocean) data synthesis project is an international collaborative effort of the EU IP CARBOOCEAN, and U.S. partners. It has produced a merged internally consistent data set of open ocean subsurface measurements for biogeochemical investigations, in particular, studies involving the carbon system. The original focus area was the North Atlantic Ocean, but over time the geographic extent expanded and CARINA now includes data from the entire Atlantic, the Arctic Ocean, and the Southern Ocean.

The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Replicate information: Replicates analyzed at three different stations throughout the cruise yielded a precision of < or = 0.05%. The reported TCO2 data have been corrected to reflect the difference in accuracy to the CRM; the correction applied is +3 ╬╝mol/kg TCO2.; Standardization description: Upon retrieval of the CTD-rosette package on deck, samples for TCO2 were collected in 500-mL glass-stoppered bottles and poisoned with 0.5 mL of saturated HgCl2 solution to decrease bacterial oxidation of organic matter prior to analysis. The samples were analyzed immediately when possible, but always within 24 h after collection.; CRM batch number: 1.
