abstract: Water and sediment samples were collected on annual ECOHAB Process cruises and on isolated Mote transects (10/13/99 and 10/20/99). Samples will be analyzed for brevetoxin using a competetive ELISA assay (Naar and Baden, in progress) as well as a receptor-binding assay (VanDolah et al., 1994), and have been analyzed for chlorophyll a (water only) using the Welschmeyer (1994) non-acidification technique.
purpose: Karenia brevis blooms can cause animal mortalities and affect human health. This data set contributes to the goals of the segment of ECOHAB: Florida that focuses on the fate and effects of toxins produced by K. brevis, addressing specifically the distribution of brevetoxins in water and sediments.

supplementalInformation: The two-worksheet spreadsheet file, toxin_data99-00REV1.xls was saved as two individual comma-separated text files: toxin_datased99-00REV1.csv and toxin_datawater99-00REV1.csv (one .csv file per spreadsheet worksheet). To conform with current NODC archival management practices, the file toxin_data99-00REV1.xls was placed in the 0-data/ directory and the translation files toxin_datased99-00REV1.csv and toxin_datawater99-00REV1.csv were placed in 1-data/. This program addresses the many factors at organismal, population, community, and ecosystem levels that determine how HAB species respond to, and potentially alter their environment, the manner in which HAB species affect food-web and community interactions. The program is based on the results of a workshop co-sponsored by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Science Foundation (NSF) and currently receives funding from several federal partners including NOAA, NSF, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
