MEDAR MEDATLAS DATABASE: Temperature, salinity, and nutrient observations collected in the Mediterranean and Black Seas as part of the MEDAR/MEDATLAS project, 1889-2000 (NCEI Accession 0000996)
The MEDAR MEDATLAS DATABASE provides data and information compiled during the MEditerranean Data Archaeology and Rescue (MEDAR) MEDATLAS II project and Inventory of hydrological oceanographic cruises carried out in the Mediterranean and Black Sea between 1889 and 2000.
The overall objective of the EU concerted action MEDAR/MEDATLAS (MAS3-CT98-0174 & ERBIC20-CT98-0103) was to make available a comprehensive data product of such multi-disciplinary in-situ data and information in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, through a wide co-operation of the Mediterranean and Black Sea countries.

Purpose | 1. to compile and safeguard historical data, with special attention to the East and South regions and the coastal areas, most of these data being regularly collected by the Mediterranean bordering countries in the frame of national regional or international programmes, and occasionally by a few other countries; 2. to make available comparable and compatible data sets of: temperature, salinity, oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, total nitrogen, phosphate, total phosphorus, silicate, H2S, pH, alkalinity, chlorophyll-a profiles by using a common protocol for formatting and quality checking; 3. to prepare and disseminate qualified value added products by using efficient gridding and mapping methodology; 4. to enhance communication between data managers and scientists to improve the data circulation. |
