This collection contains the Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM)/Jason-2 Ancillary data files. These Ancillary data files are used to generate Level-2 products. They include both static tabular data files and dynamic files which change/grow over time. They are mission specific files used in the production of Level-2 products. All Ancillary data were made unrestricted on 15 December, 2008.
Other data/products associated with OSTM/Jason-2 are also available, including Level-2 Geophysical Data Records (GDRs), auxiliary data files used to generate Level-2 products, quality reports from the near real-time altimetry validation system (NRTAVS), orbit information of OSTM/Jason-2 satellite and telemetry data.
This dataset is available to the public for a wide variety of uses including scientific research and analysis.
OSTM/Jason-2 is a collaboration between NASA; the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA); CNES; and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). CNES is providing the spacecraft, NASA and CNES are jointly providing the payload instruments and NASA's Launch Services Program at the Kennedy Space Center is responsible for Delta II launch management and countdown operations. After completing the on-orbit commissioning of the spacecraft, CNES will hand over its operation and control to NOAA. NOAA and EUMETSAT will generate the near-real-time products and distribute them to users. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

OSTM/Jason-2 is a follow-on mission to the TOPEX/Poseidon and JASON-1 missions. OSTM/Jason-2 involves Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES), NASA and 2 new partners: the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) and NOAA in order to 1) ensure continuity of high quality measurements for ocean science, and 2) provide operational products for assimilation and forecasting applications. OSTM/Jason-2 was launched on 20 June 2008 and reached its nominal repetitive orbit on 4 July 2008. The start of cycle 1 occurred on 12 July 2008. After more than 11 years in orbit and well beyond its three- to five-year mission baseline, the Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM) on Jason-2 permanently ceased acquisition of scientific data at 06:48 UTC on 1 October 2019 due to aging-related issues onboard the spacecraft.

NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information
NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.

AMR
AMR
Advanced Microwave Radiometer
The AMR is a passive receiver onboard Jason-2 (French-U.S. satellite launched in 2008) that collects radiation reflected by the oceans at frequencies of 18.7, 23.8, and 34 GHz. The AMR measures water vapor content in the atmosphere so that we can determine how it impacts radar signal propagation. Its measurements can also be used directly for studying other atmospheric phenomena, particularly rain.
Jason-2 data are being archived by the NODC as part of the Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System (CLASS)
DORIS
DORIS
Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated from Space
The DORIS system uses a ground network of orbitography beacons spread around the globe, which send signals at two frequencies to a receiver on the satellite. The relative motion of the satellite generates a shift in the signal's frequency (called the Doppler shift) that is measured to derive the satellite's velocity. These data are then assimilated in orbit determination models to keep permanent track of the satellite's precise position (to within three centimetres) on its orbit.
Jason-2 is a French-U.S. satellite launched in 2008 designed to measure rising sea levels and track the effects of climate change. Jason-2 data are being archived by the NODC as part of the Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System (CLASS).
Poseidon-3 altimeter
Poseidon-3 altimeter
Poseidon-3 altimeter
Poseidon-3 is the main instrument on board the French-U.S. satellite Jason-2 launched in 2008 and was derived from the Poseidon-2 altimeter on Jason-1.
The Poseidon-3 altimeter is a compact, low-power, low-mass instrument offering a high degree of reliability. Poseidon-3 is a radar altimeter that emits pulses at two frequencies (13.6 and 5.3 GHz; the second frequency is used to determine the electron content in the atmosphere) and analyzes the return signal reflected by the surface. The signal round-trip time is estimated very precisely to calculate the range, after applying the necessary corrections.

OTHER INFORMATION:
The Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM) is a joint effort by four organizations to measure sea surface height by using a radar altimeter mounted on a low-earth orbiting satellite called Jason-2. The four mission participants are: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (US NOAA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (US NASA), Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (FRANCE CNES), and European Meteorological Satellite Organisation (EU EUMETSAT).
JASON-2 was built under direction from CNES. After launch by NASA, CNES and NASA transferred operation and control of the JASON-2 platform to NOAA.
The Jason-2 satellite was launched in June 20, 2008.
Submitted to ICES on 2014-06-04.
Confirmed by NOAA on 2018-08-08.
