Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) Atlas: North Carolina and South Carolina Digital Data Re-release, 1996 (NODC Accession 0049956)

This data set comprises an update of the Environmental Sensitivity Indexes (ESI) data for North and South Carolina. ESI data characterize estuarine environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil. The ESI data include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources.

The ESI data were collected, mapped, and digitized to provide environmental data for oil spill planning and response. The Clean Water Act with amendments by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 requires response plans for immediate and effective protection of sensitive resources.

Data within this accession is divided into folders that include both files for GIS users and .pdf maps. Extensive metadata is provided that details each data layer and the maps.

An earlier ESI atlas for North Carolina is archived at the NODC under accession number 0013821; for South Carolina under 0013822. Files in this accession represent a consolidated, updated product with both ArcView and ArcGIS 9.2 project files. ARCE and MOSS files are in additional subdirectories.
Purpose The ESI data were collected, mapped, and digitized to provide environmental data for oil spill planning and response. The Clean Water Act with amendments by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 requires response plans for immediate and effective protection of sensitive resources.
