Data set contains Cruise Reports and CTD data from 8 main cruises in the upper Chesapeake Bay on board the R/V Hugh R. Sharp from February 2007 to October 2008. Objectives of this cruise were to sample the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) region of the Chesapeake Bay with a suite of in situ sensors (conductivity, temperature, depth, fluorometer, optical backscatter sensor, laser in-situ scattering and transmissometry device (LISST 100C), and Tracor acoustic profiling system (TAPS)), Niskin bottles, MOCNESS zooplankton nets, and a digital imaging particle settling tube with in-situ capture (DIPSTIC). The ETM in this system is most prominent in deeper waters of the shipping channel near the freshwater/saltwater interface. Our sampling strategy included 1) axial surveys of the region with CTD casts and Niskin bottles conducted at 11 stations, 2) axial surveys to sample zooplankton with MOCNESS net tows, and 3) time course sampling with Niskin bottles and DIPSTIC at three anchor stations.
This dataset is available to the public for a wide variety of uses including scientific research and analysis.

NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information
NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.

acoustic sensor
acoustic sensor
generic instrument type for sensing sound in the water column
Use acoustic sensor for a variety of types of observations, including acoustic tomography, whale and other marine mammal sound detection, etc.
Do not use acoustic sensor for instrument type when the thing being measured is distance to seafloor: use echo sounder or sidescan sonar as appropriate.
bottle
bottle
any type of water bottle sampling device
Generic name for water collection device; usually used to determine temperature, salinity and provide water aliquots for measurement of a wide range of parameters; often referred to by a specific type of water sampling bottle, such as a Nansen or Niskin bottle.
CTD
CTD
Conductivity-Temperature-Depth probe
Multiple Opening/Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System (MOCNESS)
Multiple Opening/Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System (MOCNESS)
MOCNESS is a much-improved, high-tech version of the humble sampling net. The letters in MOCNESS refer to the specific improvements: it's a Multiple Opening and Closing Net, with an Environmental Sensing System.
As MOCNESS tows behind a research ship, each net can be opened and shut independently so that it samples a discrete patch of water. The researcher chooses exactly when by using the environmental sensing system. This is an array of sensors mounted on the instrument frame that relays water conditions up to the ship in real time. The data also help researchers match what they find in their sample to the physical properties of the seawater.
oxygen sensor
oxygen sensor
Any instrument that measures oxygen content in a compound.
transmissometer
transmissometer
transmissometer
Instrument used to measure transmissivity in NODC File Alias F022.
turbidity sensor
turbidity sensor
Measures the turbidity of water
Turbidity sensors measure the amount of light that is scattered by suspended solids in a liquid, such as water. When the concentration of total suspended solids (TSS) and total dissolved solids (TDS) in a liquid increase, the turbidity also increases.
