The objective of this study was to assess the fate and physical, chemical, and biological effects of synthetic based drilling mud cuttings discharged from offshore platforms on the benthic environment of the Gulf of Mexico continental shelf and slope.
The offshore oil and gas industry uses synthetic based drilling muds (SBMs), which have carrier fluid made of synthetic materials that are designed to be less toxic and degrade faster in marine sediments than oil based drilling muds. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) recognized SBMs as a new class of drilling muds, and as part of the USEPA Region 6 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) general permit, operators have elected to participate in a joint industry seabed survey. The Gulf of Mexico Comprehensive Synthetic Based Muds Monitoring Program was sponsored by the SBM Research Group (composed of offshore operators and mud companies), the U.S. Department of Energy, and the Minerals Management Service.

NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information
NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
