NOAA AVHRR Clear-Sky Products over Oceans (ACSPO): Sea Surface Temperature, Clear Sky Radiances, and Aerosol Optical Depth for the Global Ocean, 2011 - present (NCEI Accession 0072979)

The AVHRR Clear-Sky Processor over Oceans, jointly developed between NESDIS STAR and OSDPD, produces AVHRR clear-sky products over oceans. ACSPO generates output files from two processors: 1) The ACSPO Orbital Processor, which reads in AVHRR L1b GAC files, performs retrievals, and writes the results in the output orbital HDF file; and 2) The ACSPO Granule Processor, which reads in the Orbital Processor output HDF files, removes duplicate data, generates 1-hour granules, and writes these HDF granule files in the structure defined by the ACSPO Granule Processor control file. Only Granule Processor output files (granules) are archived. ACSPO data products include clear-sky radiances (CSR), sea surface temperature (SST), and aerosol optical depth (AOD). All parameters are in original satellite projection (swath files) and are computed for current operational POES satellites, POES back-up satellites, and MetOp satellites, from AVHRR-GAC, AVHRR-LAC, AVHRR-HRPT and AVHRR-FRAC input data. These products are NOAA Processing Level 2.

Three web pages have been set up to monitor the quality and accuracy of ACSPO products, in near-real time: 1) The MICROS (Monitoring of Infrared Clear-sky Radiances over Oceans for SST, http://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/sod/sst/micros/) monitors accuracy of CSRs by comparing with those simulated using the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) with Reynolds SST and NCEP/GFS upper air fields as input. 2) The SQUAM (SST Quality Monitor, http://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/sod/sst/squam/index.html) monitors long-term stability, and cross-platform consistency of the ACSPO SST product by comparing it with the global reference fields such as Reynolds SST, OSTIA, RTG, and ODYSSEA. It also monitors accuracy and precision of ACSPO SST with respect to the global in situ SSTs measured by drifting and moored buoys.
Purpose The purpose of the AVHRR Clear-Sky Processor over Oceans is to produce clear-sky products over oceans from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) for the designated user community.
