Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: The seawater samples for the determination of AT and CT were drawn into 500-1000 mL borosilicate glass bottles sealed with glass stoppers according to the collection methods of DOE (1994). The samples were poisoned with saturated mercuric chloride solution to prevent further biological activity, stored at room temperature away from light and analysed on shore as soon as possible. AT and CT measurements were preformed simultaneously using the potentiometric acid titration method in a closed cell, which was maintained at constant temperature (25+/-0.1 °C) by a thermostated water bath. The ionic strength of the hydrochloric acid solution (0.1 N) used for the titrations was adjusted with NaCl in order to be similar to that of the samples. The hydrochloric acid solution was added with an automatic burette (ABU 80, Radiometer) and the progress of the titration was monitored using a glass electrode/reference electrode pH cell (PHM-84, Radiometer). The burette and the pH-meter were interfaced with a computer using data-acquisition software. The AT corresponds to the carbonic acid endpoint and the CT concentration is computed by the difference between the two endpoints, which were calculated using a modified Gran approach, a procedure recognized by DOE (1994).; CRM batch number: #24 supplied by Dr A.G. Dickson of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA, USA.
  • Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: TA; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Type of titration: potentiometric acid titration method; Cell type (open or closed): thermostated closed cell; Curve fitting method: Modified Gran approach; Uncertainty: The analytical precision for AT based on duplicate seawater samples was 5.3 μmol/kg. The accuracy of the AT was assessed by measurements of certified reference material (CRM, Batch #24 supplied by Dr A.G. Dickson of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA, USA) and was +/-3.2 μmol/kg.; Method reference: DOE, 1994.
