Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon;
Abbreviation: TCABN;
Observation type: discrete;
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation;
Sampling instrument: Niskin Bottles;
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: The seawater samples for the determination of ALKALI and TCARBN were drawn into 500-1000 mL borosilicate glass bottles sealed with glass stoppers according to the collection methods of DOE (1994). The samples were poisoned with saturated mercuric chloride solution (Poison Volume (mL): 0.2-0.5 mL depending on sample volume) to prevent further biological activity, stored at room temperature away from light and analysed on shore as soon as possible. ALKALI and TCARBN measurements were preformed simultaneously using the potentiometric acid titration method in a closed cell, which was maintained at constant temperature (25 ± 0.1 ºC) by a thermostated water bath. The ionic strength of the hydrochloric acid solution (0.1 N) used for the titrations was adjusted with NaCl in order to be similar to that of the samples. The hydrochloric acid solution was added with an automatic burette (ABU 80, Radiometer) and the progress of the titration was monitored using a glass electrode/reference electrode pH cell (PHM-84, Radiometer). The burette and the pH-meter were interfaced with a computer using data-acquisition software. The ALKALI corresponds to the carbonic acid endpoint and the TCARBN concentration is computed by the difference between the two endpoints, which were calculated using a modified Gran approach, a procedure recognized by DOE (1994). The analytical precision for TCARBN based on duplicate seawater samples was 6.3 µmol Kg-1. The accuracy of TCARBN was assessed by CRM measurements and was ±5.6 µmol Kg-1. The analytical precision for ALKALI based on duplicate seawater samples was 5.3 µmol Kg-1. The accuracy of the ALKALI was assessed by CRM measurements and was ±3.2 µmol Kg-1. Batch #24 supplied by Dr A.G. Dickson (SIO,USA) were used to control the analytical precision.;
CRM batch number: #24 supplied by Dr A.G. Dickson of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA, USA.
