Dataset Overview | National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI)

Completed dataset from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) collected during the response to the Deepwater Horizon incident in the Gulf of Mexico onboard the M/V Ryan Chouest Cruise 1 through Cruise 15 from 2010-06-05 to 2010-09-14 (NCEI Accession 0086283)

In response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) conducted on-site monitoring of dispersed oil at the request of BP. This dataset contains structured content and unstructured content. The structured content is the CSIRO shipboard measurements including CTD vertical profiles, towed fluorometry, onboard hydrocarbon sensors and GCMS data. Unstructured content is associated with shipboard measurements, including photos, raw data files/casts, cast profiles, sonar contacts, daily reports and cruise summaries. Included in this data product are CSIRO documentation with detailed information in a database data dictionary and manifest.

Supplemental Information
In this accession, NCEI has archived multiple versions of these data. The latest (and best) version of these data has the largest version number."

This data product includes: CSIRO shipboard measurements of CTD vertical profiles, towed fluorometry, onboard hydrocarbon sensors, and GCMS data. Also included are photo, raw data files/casts, cast profiles, Daily Reports and cruise summaries.

This data product metadata record describes and records the data collection activities that took place on cruises for the NOAA Subsurface Monitoring Unit for the Deepwater Horizon incident response. The information in this metadata record was documented by DWH SMU Data Management Coordinators. Information can be viewed using the DWH Data Access Google Map developed by the National Coastal Data Development Center.

This database was initially released to NOAA in October 2011 by CSIRO. CSIRO staff subsequently determined that errors existed in some components of the database, and sent revised components to NOAA in December 2011. Some of the instrumentation datasets associated with this database are still raw and unprocessed and will be published as they become available. NOAA Office of Response & Restoration (OR&R) cannot provide any warranty as to the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of furnished data.

Errors were detected by CSIRO in some components of the database in December 2011, including date/time and location errors in tables associated with particular cruises. Tables were revised by CSIRO and an updated database (Obs_LogsData.mdb file) was released to NOAA and added to the NCDDC Deepwater Horizon data collection to replace the older erroneous files.
