- Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Replicate information: A control chart was prepared using the duplicate data as described in SOP 22 of the DOE handbook (Figure 4). The average non-absolute difference (2nd - 1st in the order of analysis) was 0.38 μmol kg-1 and the standard deviation was 1.2 μmol kg-1. The average value is statistically distinguishable from zero, where zero is the ideal result that would indicate all sources of error were random or independent of both time and the amount of carbon titrated within a given cell. It is thought that this error is related to the chemical evolution of the cell solutions with repeated titrations. However, since the exact nature of these cells’ chemistry is not well-understood, no correction was made to account for this observation.; Standardization description: A total of 2,935 CT analyses were made including: 1. 189 measurements of Certified Reference Materials (CRM Batch 71, CT 2032.85 ± 0.40 μmol kg-1). 2. 196 sets of duplicate measurements made on separate seawater samples collected from the same Niskin. 3. 86 measurements made on four separate batches of a reference material that were prepared at sea. 4. 25 rejected measurements of samples with known errors. 5. 2439 measurements of sample CT that are presented with quality control codes.; CRM batch number: 71.
