This dataset includes discrete sample and profile data collected during the R/V Roger Revelle cruise along CLIVAR Repeat Section I06S (EXPOCODE 33RR20080204) in the Indian and Southern Oceans from 2008-02-04 to 2008-03-17. These data include the measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity, pH on seawater scale, CTD temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, chlorofluorocarbons (CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC113), tritium, tritier, neon, helium, delta C13, delta C14, and delta O18. These data were collected by Rik Wanninkhof of NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, Andrew Dickson of University of California - San Diego; Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Craig A. Carlson of University of California - Santa Barbara as part of the CLIVAR_I06S_2008 data set. The International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: The analysis was done by coulometry with two analytical systems (AOML3 and AOML4); CRM batch number: Batch 85; Researcher name: Rik Wanninkhof; Researcher institution: NOAA/AOML.
  • Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: TA; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Type of titration: potentiometric; Cell type (open or closed): Open; Curve fitting method: The total alkalinity analyses performed during I6S, were performed using a two-stage, potentiometric, opencell titration and coulometrically analyzed hydrochloric acid.; Uncertainty: Preliminary data indicate that the samples are approximately 2 units higher than the certified alkalinity value for Batch 86. After rejecting 6 of 166 CRM runs, the standard deviation was about 1 umole/kg-sol. The duplicates typically agreed within 0 to 2 umoles/kg of each other, with most of the duplicates within 1 umole/kg of the first run.; Researcher name: Andrew Dickson; Researcher institution: SIO, University of California at San Diego.
  • Parameter or Variable: pH; Abbreviation: PH_SWS; pH scale: Seawater scale; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Temperature of pH measurement: 20; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Measurements were made using a modified version of the procedure described in Clayton and Byrne 1993 with spectrophotometric measurements of pH-sensitive m-cresol purple dye added to seawater. Measurements were made relative to 20C for stations numbered 1-24, and at 13C for all subsequent stations.; Uncertainty: For stations 25-73, the precision is estimated to be 0.001. For all remaining stations the precision is estimated at 0.0005; Researcher name: Andrew Dickson; Researcher institution: SIO, University of California at San Diego.
