This dataset includes discrete sample and profile data collected from ATLANTIS in the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean from 2012-03-24 to 2012-04-17 and retrieved during cruise CLIVAR_A22_2012. These data include CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-113 (CFC-113), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), Carbon tetrachloride (CCL4), DELTA CARBON-13, DELTA CARBON-14, DELTA HELIUM-3, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON (DIC), DISSOLVED ORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HELIUM, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NEON, NITRATE, NITRITE, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SULFUR HEXAFLUORIDE (SF6), TOTAL ALKALINITY (TA), Total Dissolved Nitrogen (TDN), Tritium (Hydrogen isotope), WATER TEMPERATURE, pH, phosphate and silicate. The instruments used to collect these data include Alkalinity titrator, CTD, Coulometer for DIC measurement, bottle and spectrophotometer.
These data were collected by Dennis Hansell of Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Rik Wanninkhof of NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory and Richard A. Feely of US DOC; NOAA; OAR; Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory as part of the CLIVAR_A22_2012 data set.
The International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters.
This dataset is available to the public for a wide variety of uses including scientific research and analysis.

dataset
Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon;
Abbreviation: DIC;
Observation type: discrete;
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation;
Measured or calculated: Calculated;
Replicate information: Greater than 10% of these samples were taken as replicates as a check of our precision. These replicate samples were typically taken from the surface, oxygen minimum, and bottom bottles. The replicate samples were interspersed throughout the station analysis for quality assurance and integrity of the coulometer cell solutions and no systematic differences between the replicates were observed. The absolute average difference from the mean of these replicates is 0.8 μmol/kg.;
Standardization description: Secondary standards were run throughout the cruise (at least one per station) on each analytical system. These standards are Certified Reference Materials (CRMs), consisting of poisoned, filtered, and UV irradiated seawater supplied by Dr. A. Dickson of Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). Their accuracy is determined manometrically on land in San Diego. DIC data reported to the database have been corrected to the batch 117 CRM value. The reported CRM value for this batch is 2009.99 μmol/kg. The average measured values (in μmol/kg during this cruise) were 2010.36 for PMEL-1 and 2010.47 for PMEL-2.;
CRM batch number: Batch 117.
Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity;
Abbreviation: TA;
Observation type: discrete;
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation;
Measured or calculated: Measured;
Type of titration: Single point titration, open cell.;
Cell type (open or closed): Open;
Curve fitting method: Total alkalinity measurements were made using an open-cell, two-stage, potentiometric titration procedure similar to that used to certify reference materials for total alkalinity (see Dickson et al., 2003), except that samples were not weighed into the titration vessel but instead 99.9 mL was dispensed from a Dosimat using a 50 mL burette.;

Abbreviation: pH;
pH scale: total hydrogen ion scale;
Observation type: discrete;
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation;
Measured or calculated: Measured;
Temperature of pH measurement: 25C;
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: pH on the total scale was measured using an Agilent 8453 spectrophotometer according to the methods outlined by Clayton and Byrne (1993). A Thermo NESLAB RTE-7 water bath maintained spectrophotometric cell temperature at 25.0C..

NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information
NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.

Metadata are developed, maintained and distributed by NCEI. Updates are performed as needed to maintain currentness.
NCEI Accession 0109915 was revised and a new version of the archival package was published. Updates to existing archival packages may provide additional files or replace obsolete files. The latest version contains the most complete and up-to-date representation of this archival information package. All of the files received prior to this update are available in the preceding version of this accession. Please see journal.txt in the /about directory for additional details on changes made.

bottle
bottle
any type of water bottle sampling device
Generic name for water collection device; usually used to determine temperature, salinity and provide water aliquots for measurement of a wide range of parameters; often referred to by a specific type of water sampling bottle, such as a Nansen or Niskin bottle.

coulometer for DIC measurement
measures dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC)
A known amount of seawater is dispensed into a stripping chamber where it is acidified and purged with an inert gas. The amount of CO2 in the resulting gas stream is determined by absorbing the CO2 in an absorbent. The pH of the solution is monitored by measuring the transmittance .

spectrophotometer, optical spectrometer, spectrograph or spectroscope
An optical spectrometer (spectrophotometer, spectrograph or spectroscope) is an instrument used to measure properties of light over a specific portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, typically used in spectroscopic analysis to identify materials.
Butler, L. R. P.; Laqua, K. (1995). "Nomenclature, symbols, units and their usage in spectrochemical analysis-IX. Instrumentation for the spectral dispersion and isolation of optical radiation (IUPAC Recommendations 1995)". Pure Appl. Chem. IUPAC. 67 (10): 1725–1744. doi:10.1351/pac199567101725. A spectrometer is the general term for describing a combination of spectral apparatus with one or more detectors to measure the intensity of one or more spectral bands."
