This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from METEOR in the North Atlantic Ocean and South Atlantic Ocean from 2002-10-13 to 2002-11-16 and retrieved during cruise CARINA/06MT20021013. These data include ALKALINITY, AMMONIUM, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, PHOSPHATE, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SILICATE and WATER TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle. These data were collected by Douglas Wallace of Universitat Kiel; Institut Fur Meereskunde; Forschungsbereich Marine Biogeochemie as part of the CARINA/06MT20021013 data set.

The CARINA (CARbon dioxide IN the Atlantic Ocean) data synthesis project is an international collaborative effort of the EU IP CARBOOCEAN, and U.S. partners. It has produced a merged internally consistent dataset of open ocean subsurface measurements for biogeochemical investigations, in particular, studies involving the carbon system. The original focus area was the North Atlantic Ocean, but over time the geographic extent expanded and CARINA now includes data from the entire Atlantic, the Arctic Ocean, and the Southern Ocean.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Coulometric titration [Johnson et al., 1993]. CRM corrected from batch 60. Mean offset between our measurements and the Certified Values was 0.12 +/- 0.84 μmol kg-1 (95% confidence interval, n = 17). Measured DIC concentrations were therefore adjusted to the Certified calibration scale by subtraction of this mean offset. The DIC samples were measured after the cruise in the lab in Kiel..
  • Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: TA; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Curve fitting method: Potentiometric titration [Mintrop et al., 2000]. CRM corrected from batch 60. The mean difference between measurements and the Certified values was 0.8 +/- 2.37 μmol kg-1 (95% confidence interval, n=16). Alkalinity values have been adjusted to the certified value by addition of this mean offset. The alkalinity samples were measured after the cruise in the lab in Kiel..
