This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from SEWARD JOHNSON in the North Atlantic Ocean from 2001-01-02 to 2001-02-18 and retrieved during cruise CARINA/33SW20010102 and MP-1. These data include ALKALINITY, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, PHOSPHATE, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SILICATE and WATER TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle. These data were collected by Patricia L. Yager of University of Georgia; School of Marine Programs and A. Michaels and D. Capone [affiliation unknown] as part of the CARINA/33SW20010102, MP-1 data set.
The CARINA (CARbon dioxide IN the Atlantic Ocean) data synthesis project is an international collaborative effort of the EU IP CARBOOCEAN, and U.S. partners. It has produced a merged internally consistent dataset of open ocean subsurface measurements for biogeochemical investigations, in particular, studies involving the carbon system. The original focus area was the North Atlantic Ocean, but over time the geographic extent expanded and CARINA now includes data from the entire Atlantic, the Arctic Ocean, and the Southern Ocean.
This dataset is available to the public for a wide variety of uses including scientific research and analysis.

Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon;
Abbreviation: DIC;
Observation type: discrete;
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation;
Measured or calculated: Calculated;
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Measured at sea using a SOMMA (Single Operator Multi-Metabolic Analyzer) connected to a CO2 coulometer (UIC, Inc) interfaced to a PC. See Johnson et al., 1993; 1998.;
Standardization description: The instrument was first calibrated using a standard CO2 gas (99.999%). Certified Reference Material (Dickson 2001) was run twice at the start of every day, after every ten samples, and at the end of the day. Unless daily drift was detected (rare), the we computed the average CRM for the day, calculated the ratio of the expected CRM value to the measured value, and multiplied all the data by this ratio. In the rare case of drift, we corrected to the nearest CRM.;
CRM batch number: 50.
Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity;
Abbreviation: TA;
Observation type: discrete;
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation;
Measured or calculated: Measured;
Type of titration: Potentiometric titration using an automated burette with 0.1N HCl in 0.7 M NaCl;
Cell type (open or closed): Open;
Curve fitting method: Calculated using the modified gran approach (Dickson et al., 2003);
TA blank correction: none used;
Uncertainty: CRMs were used as primary alkalinity reference standards to back calculate titration acid concentration. This forced the absolute accuracy of samples to CRM standards. Instrument precision (sR, based on duplicate runs of each CRM) = 1.74 ueq/kg. Sampling precision (sR, based on duplicate samples collected in series from the same Niskin bottle) = 2.758 ueq/kg.;

The R/V Seward Johnson, namesake of HARBOR BRANCH founder J. Seward Johnson, Sr., is a 204 ft Oceanographic and Submersible-Support Research Vessel. Built in 1984, commissioned in 1985 and extensively rebuilt and stretched in 1994, the ship now displaces 1,282 tons. A 6,000 nautical mile range and a speed of 13 knots is delivered by two 850 hp engines. The vessel is capable of traveling and working in any of the world's oceans, while accommodating up to 40 people (29 investigators, sub crew, or technicians; 11 ship’s crew).
