This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from KAIYO-MARU in the North Pacific Ocean and Philippine Sea from 1996-06-17 to 1996-07-02 and retrieved during cruise WOCE_P08S. These data include ALKALINITY, DELTA CARBON-14, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HELIUM, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, PHOSPHATE, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SILICATE, Tritium (Hydrogen isotope), WATER TEMPERATURE and pH. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle. These data were collected by Noriya Yoshioka of Japan Marine Science and Technology Center as part of the WOCE_P08S data set.
The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

- Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: The T-CO2 concentration in seawater samples were determined by using the coulometric titration system (UIC Inc., Carbon Coulometer model 5011) described by Jhonson et al. (1985) with the modified CO2 extraction system described by Shitashima et al. (1996).; Standardization description: Samples for T-CO2 analysis were drawn from the Niskin samplers into 125ml glass vial bottles after an overflow of about 100ml of the sea water. The samples were immediately poisoned with 50ul of 50% saturated HgCl2 in order to restrict biological alteration prior to sealing the bottles. All samples were stored in a refrigerator before measurement, and were analyzed within 12 hours of collection.; CRM batch number: 32.
- Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: TA; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Type of titration: inflection point titration; Curve fitting method: The titration was controlled automatically and the titration curve was analyzed with the inflection point titration method by the system.; Uncertainty: The precision of the method was determined to be 0.0043mmol/kg (n=17) from replicate analysis of the Certified Reference Solutions (CRMs (batch 32) supplied by Dr. Andrew Dickson of Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO)). Standardization of the titrant (0.1 M HCl) was accomplished with Na2CO3 (99.99% pure; Asahi Grass) standards.; Method reference: Dickson, A. G. and C. Goyet. 1994.
