This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from THOMAS WASHINGTON in the South Pacific Ocean from 1991-07-16 to 1991-08-25 and retrieved during cruise TUNES_2 and WOCE_P16S17S. These data include ALKALINITY, CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), DELTA CARBON-13, DELTA CARBON-14, DELTA HELIUM-3, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HELIUM, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, PHOSPHATE, Partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SILICATE, Tritium (Hydrogen isotope) and WATER TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle. These data were collected by Taro Takahashi of Columbia University; Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory as part of the WOCE_P16S17S data set.

The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: The coulometric analysis system which was used to measure the TCO2 concentration in seawater samples during the expedition is similar to the one described by Johnson et al. (1985). This system consists of a coulometer (Model 5011) manufactured by the UIC Inc. (Jollies, IL) and a sample introduction/CO2 extraction system of the LDEO design, which differs from the Single Operator Multiparameter Metabolic Analyzer (SOMMA) system used by most of the other participants of the DOE/CO2 program. In the LDEO system (Chipman et al., 1993), a precisely known volume of seawater sample is introduced manually into an CO2 extraction vessel using a calibrated syringe, instead of an automated pipette used by the SOMMA system.; CRM batch number: 6.
  • Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: TA; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Type of titration: potentiometric; Cell type (open or closed): Closed; Curve fitting method: The TALK concentration in 139 samples was determined on shore at the laboratory of C. Goyet of WHOI.; Uncertainty: The precision of the measurements was estimated to be better than 0.1%.; Method reference: Bradshaw, A. L., P. G. Brewer, D. K. Shafer, and R. T. Williams. 1981. • Parameter or Variable: pCO2 (fCO2) discrete; Abbreviation: fCO2; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Storage method: The samples were poisoned with 200 uL of 50% saturated mercuric chloride solution to prevent biological modification of the pCO2, and were stored in the dark until measurement, which normally was performed within 24 hours of sampling.; Seawater volume: 500 mL; Headspace volume: 3-5 mL; Temperature of measurement: 20 degree C; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: A fully automated equilibrator-gas chromatograph system was used during the expedition for the determination of partial pressure of CO2 exerted by the seawater samples, and its design has been described by Chipman et al. (1993).; Temperature correction method: constant temperature water bath; Uncertainty: The overall precision of the pCO2 measurement has been estimated to be about 0.10% based on the reproducibility of replicate equilibrations.; Method reference: Chipman, D.
