This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from THOMAS WASHINGTON in the North Pacific Ocean and South Pacific Ocean from 1991-08-31 to 1991-10-01 and retrieved during cruise WOCE_P16C. These data include ALKALINITY, CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), DELTA CARBON-13, DELTA CARBON-14, DELTA HELIUM-3, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HELIUM, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, PHOSPHATE, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SILICATE, Tritium (Hydrogen isotope) and WATER TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle. These data were collected by Charles D. Keeling and Peter Guenther of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Catherine Goyet of University of Perpignan via Domitia; Institute of Modeling and Analysis of Geo-Environment and Health as part of the WOCE_P16C data set.
The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.
This dataset is available to the public for a wide variety of uses including scientific research and analysis.

Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon;
Abbreviation: DIC;
Observation type: discrete;
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation;
Measured or calculated: Calculated;
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: TCO2 concentration was measured by semiautomated coulometry using an improved version of the instrument earlier described by Johnson et al. (1985, 1987) and calibrated using the procedure described in Goyet and Hacker (1992). This early SOMMA-type system did not have gas loops for calibration.;
CRM batch number: 19 20.
Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity;
Abbreviation: TA;
Observation type: discrete;
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation;
Measured or calculated: Measured;
Type of titration: closed- cell potentiometric acid titration system;
Cell type (open or closed): Closed;
Curve fitting method: All sampleas for TALK were preserved and delivered to SIO for shore-based analysis. The closed cell potentiometric acid titration system was designed and constructed at SIO by David Moss with the developmental and experimental assistance of Timothy Lueker.;
Uncertainty: The question of the accuracy of the acid calibration and indeed of the titration method overall is less clear due to the lack of a Certified Reference Material for ALK. Interlaboratory comparisons indicate that the accuracy level may be +/- 10 microequiv./kilogram or more.;
