Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Replicate information: 328 samples reported as duplicates. Average absolute difference from the mean = 0.61; Standardization description: 1) Gas Calibation Loops (~1 and 2ml) w/ 99.999% pure CO2 using an 8 port valco 2) Certified Reference Materials; CRM batch number: 124 - certified value = 2015.72.
  • Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: TA; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Type of titration: Two-state, open-cell, potentiometric titration with HCl (~0.1 mol/kg) in an NaCl background.; Cell type (open or closed): open cell; Curve fitting method: Non-linear least squares - see Dickson et al. (2007); TA blank correction: N/A; Uncertainty: The repeatability (1 std. dev.) of ALK measurements (estimated from duplicate analyses of seawater) was 0.96 µmol/kg (307 pairs) Measurements of seawater reference materials throughout the cruise gave a result of 2214.66 ± 1.02 (389) µmol/kg - mean ± std. dev (n) As the certified value was 2215.08 ± 0.49 µmol/kg, no further adjustment was considered necessary. The overall standard uncertainty of these measurements is thus approximately 1.5 µmol/kg.; Method reference: Dickson, Andrew G., Chris Sabine and James R. Christian, editors, "Guide to Best Practices for Ocean CO2 Measurements", Pices Special Publication 3, IOCCP Report No. 8, October 2007, SOP 3b, "Determination of total alkalinity in sea water using an open-cell titration".
  • Parameter or Variable: pH; Abbreviation: pH; pH scale: total hydrogen ion concentration (mol/kg-soln); Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Temperature of pH measurement: 25 DegC; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: spectrophotometric determination using purified m-cresol purple; Uncertainty: The repeatability (1 std. dev.) of pH measurements (estimated from duplicate analyses of seawater) was 0.0010 pH units (301 pairs). The standard deviation from measurements on seawater reference materials made throughout the cruise was 0.0014 pH units (n = 362). The overall standard uncertainty is harder to judge. Carter et al. (2013) estimated it as about 0.005, assuming an uncertainty contribution from the dye calibration equivalent to 0.004 in pH. I suspect it could be larger — we are working to better understand this..
