In July 2014, Fish Lidar, Oceanic, Experimental (FLOE) Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) was installed in a NOAA Twin Otter to make the first synoptic measurements of subsurface phytoplankton layers associated with the retreating ice in the Arctic Ocean. We made a series of flights out of Barrow, Alaska over the Chukchi Sea to the west or the Beaufort Sea to the East. Our objectives were to see if thin plankton layers exist below the surface in the Arctic and how they might be affected by retreating ice. We have observed layers associated with stratification in other parts of the ocean [Churnside and Donaghay, 2009], and expected to find them in the Marginal Ice Zone as well. The LIDAR was able to measure the layer characteristics and the fractional ice cover simultaneously. These layers, which are not adequately captured in satellite data, will influence primary productivity, secondary productivity, fisheries recruitment, and carbon export to the benthos.

Processing Steps
  • Data Type: Lidar signal (measured); Units: amp; Observation Type: other; Sampling Instrument: Oceanographic lidar; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Lidar data were collected at a flight altitude of 300 m and a speed of 60 m/sec . Lidar pulse repetition rate was 30 Hz. The system and operation is described further in the references. For the first 4 days (17-23 July) both receiver channels were set to record the cross polarized return. After that, one channel recorded the cross polarized return and the other the co polarized return. Analysis was by visual inspection of the raw data. Ice was initially identified by the presence of a saturated lidar return, and marked with a flag in the raw data files. This was verified by visual inspection. Plankton layers were identified by visual inspection, and also marked with a flag in the raw data files. At the same time, a separate file was created to include the shot number and depth at which each identified layer started and ended.; Data Quality Information: In post processing, each lidar shot was checked for receiver saturation, which indicates ice. Data were visually inspected for fog, land, and other bad data shots. Flags were set to 1 (binary, not ASCII) in the presence of ice (byte 2150), fog (byte 2151), land (byte 2152), missing data (byte 2155), and bad data, including when the aircraft was outside the altitude range (byte 2153). Lidar profiles were not used if any of these flags were set to 1.
