Net primary productivity collected from New Horizon in Gulf of California and North Pacific Ocean from 2004-07-14 to 2008-08-06 (NCEI Accession 0130076)

browse graphicPreview graphic
Net primary productivity determined from 13C-labeled in situ incubations. Water collected via Niskin bottle was incubated with labeled bicarbonate for 24 hours at the original collection depth, and 13C-incorporation into suspended particulate organic carbon determined via mass spectrometry. Measurements made in the Gulf of California in the summers of 2004, 2005, and 2008, as well as from the Eastern Tropical North Pacific in 2008.

Processing Steps
  • Data Type: PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY - NET PLANKTON (calculated); Units: nanograms C/L/d; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Free-floating incubation array; Sampling and Analyzing Method: 13C labeled incubations were conducted at the depth of initial water collection (via Niskin bottle) in free-floating arrays deployed as described in Prahl et al. (2005). All incubations were in situ for a period of 24 h, from dawn to dawn. The general procedure for preparation of these 13C-bicarbonate incubations is described in White et al. (2007). Duplicate incubations were carried out at 4–5 depths between the surface and 40–60 m. At the end of each incubation period, suspended particles were collected by vacuum filtration through 25- mm diameter, precombusted glass fiber filters (GF/F). Filters were immediately stored at -20 C. Once ashore, samples were dried overnight at 60 C, acidified and then encapsulated in tin cups for analysis of their organic d13C composition using the methodology described in Prahl et al. (2005). Here we assume 24-h incubations measuring the incorporation of 13C-bicarbonate in particulate matter approximates net primary production (NPP) as per Marra (2002) and Halsey et al. (2010).; Data Quality Information: Standard deviation of replicate incubations presented. Depths with no replication are flagged as "NR".
