This dataset includes discrete sample and profile data collected from POLARSTERN in the South Atlantic Ocean from 2012-01-07 to 2012-03-11. These data include CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON (DIC), DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SULFUR HEXAFLUORIDE (SF6), TOTAL ALKALINITY (TA), WATER TEMPERATURE, phosphate and silicate. The instruments used to collect these data include Alkalinity titrator, CTD, Coulometer for DIC measurement, bottle and pH sensors.

These data were collected by Mario Hoppema of Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research and Toste Tanhua of Helmholtz-Zentrum Fr Ozeanforschung as part of the CLIVAR_A12_06AQ20120107 data set. CDIAC associated the following cruise ID(s) with this data set: ANTXXVIII/3

The International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters.

  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Replicate information: The precision of the DIC measurements is 1.04 μmol/kg, based on the average difference between all CRM in-bottle duplicate analyses.; Standardization description: Corrected to CRMs; CRM batch number: 113.
  • Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: TA; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Type of titration: Potentiometric titration; Curve fitting method: The alkalinity measurements were made by potentiometric titration with a strong acid (HCl) as a titrant. The acid consumption up to the second endpoint is equivalent to the titration alkalinity. The system uses a highly precise Metrohm Titrino for adding acid, a pH electrode and a reference electrode.
