Aiming for near-real-time data-quality monitoring of the Level-2 satellite sea surface salinity (SSS) products, the satellite oceanography team of NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) has generated quick-look 1.0-degree Level-3 experimental products from the NASA Aquarius/Satélite de Aplicaciones Científicas (SAC)-D satellites level-2 swath data. The datasets are comprised of two respective Level-3 monthly and 7-day mean datasets, one from the standard level-2 SSS data created by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Aquarius Data Processing System (ADPS) and another from the one created by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) based on the Combined Active-Passive (CAP) algorithm. The Level-2 swath data is interpolated onto a 1.0-degree grid using equal-weighted box (“bin”) averaging.
This dataset is available to the public for a wide variety of uses including scientific research and analysis.

Notes +: Aquarius is a NASA instrument aboard the Argentine SAC-D spacecraft. Its mission is to measure global sea surface salinity to better predict future climate conditions.
The Aquarius/SAC-D mission goals are to observe and model the processes that relate salinity variations to climatic changes in the global cycling of water and to understand how these variations influence general ocean circulation. Accurate measurements of SSS (Sea Surface Salinity), along with sea surface temperature, will determine the sea surface density, which controls the formation of water masses and regulates the 3-dimensional ocean circulation. The goals of Aquarius/SAC-D are closely aligned to the goals of NASA's ESE (Earth Science Enterprise) program and to the National Space Program of Argentina.
Aquarius will measure sea surface salinity by using radiometers to detect changes in the oceans microwave thermal emissions frequencies due to salinity. Aquarius’ three radiometers have antenna reflectors 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) in diameter that are able to scan a 390 kilometer (242 mile) wide swath of the ocean’s surface collectively. The radiometers on Aquarius are the most accurate ever and are able to sense at a frequency of 1.4 GHz.
Level 3 (L3) sea surface salinity data will be processed from Level 2 data at the NODC and archived commencing in 2014.

SAC-D
SAC-D is the authorized Spanish representation for the Satelite de Aplicaciones Cientificas-D, meaning Satellite for Scientific Applications-D. This platform and the mission it supports is a joint project between US NASA and Argentina CONAE (Comisión Nacional de Actividades Espaciales).
This satellite platform supports the US NASA Aquarius mission and the platform may also be identified as 'Aquarius', 'Aquarius/SAC-D', 'SAC-D/Aquarius'. A primary instrument on the SAC-D satellite is the Aquarius instrument.
Owner/platform operations: Comisión Nacional de Actividades Espaciales (CONAE; in English, National Space Activities Commission) is the civilian agency of the government of Argentina in charge of the national space program.
Platform class: orbiting satellite
